Everyone knows that the Burke Museum was once the Beechworth Library which in 1863 added the O"Hara Burke Memorial Musuem. It was extended in 1874, remodelled n 1961. When Burke was dying after his epic walk, he asked that his revolver be placed by his side - it read - "Presented to Captain Burke by the Residents of Beechworth, Victoria". Robert O"Hara Burke was Captain of Police in Beechworth and was known in the area for his lack of bushsense. He then decided to walk across Australia! Denise
