    3. The district around Tarrawingee came into being with surprising suddenness when the cry "unlock the land" was heeded by the government. Par tof Dr. Edward Mackay's run was opened up. by 1857 the area was taking on the appearnce of the English countryside. Tarrawingee became the stopping pace ofr coaches on the long haul from Melbourne to Ovens and a meeting place for district settlers. One of the earliest businessmen was Hopton Nolan widely known for his 50 years association with the towns longest serving hotel the Plough Inn. He had been a public most of his adult life and was a close associate of John A Wallace (Star HOtel man) at Stanley when it was known as 9mile. He moved to Chiltern, looked after John's ineests there and then moved to Tarrawingee. He died in 1910. The Plough Inn was a single story structure and the second story was added in 1867. The other prominent building in the town is Ladson's Store which took it sname from Ladson Bros. when began as store keepers in early Beechworth. The Nolan family used this store years later as a private home but eventually it fell into disrepair. It was added to the National Trust in 1984 and was then renovated and restored to its original condition.
