A Dr MacFarlane was in Wangaratta Can anyone tell me when a Dr. MacFarlane was in practice in Wangaratta same time as Harris owned the Commercial Hotel I am trying to date a cutting frm a newspaper. It was after the railway line went thru. Denise
Hi Denise, I found one reference in the newspaper articles I've typed in to the computer to Dr. MacFarlane - Wangaratta Chronicle, Wednesday 1 June 1887. "He received the most careful treatment at the hands of Dr. MACFARLANE, but medical skill was unavailing." He was treating my GGG Grandfather Charles MEYER when Charles died. Denise, Cannot help with commencement date for Dr Macfarlane's practice but the following is from "A Hospital in Wangaratta". Dr. Archibald Martin Macfarlane was appointed Resident Medical Officer in May, 1881, and in November, 1884, escorted the reporter of the "Advertiser" around the Hospital. In his report he wrote, "The House Surgeon has the whole of the internal control of the institution and, although not compulsorily resident, Dr. Macfarlane, to whom quarters are allotted, sleeps on the premises, an arrangement convenent for himself and necessarily giving a sense of security and comfort to the patients....." and "......until it was necessary for Dr Macfarlane to sell his practice and resign, owing to ill health, in February, 1889." THANK you Jackie. This gives me a time frame for a incident when Hiram Crawford was involved and injured in a train accident. The carriages and the engine parted company without the driver knowing. The engine kept going and so did the carriages and when the driver discovered he'd lost his load, he reversed only to crash into the oncoming carriages. Hiram and another man ended up in the Commercial Hospital in a bad way. See, it pays to ask what seems to be stupid quesitons - or it seemed stupid to me. But it paid off. Again thankyou Denise ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jackie Callinan" <jackiecall@netspace.net.au> To: <AUS-VIC-NE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, April 06, 2002 7:40 PM Subject: RE: [AVNE] Wangaratta - Dr. McFarlane > Denise, > Cannot help with commencement date for Dr Macfarlane's practice but the > following is from "A Hospital in Wangaratta". > Dr. Archibald Martin Macfarlane was appointed Resident Medical Officer in > May, 1881, and in November, 1884, escorted the reporter of the "Advertiser" > around the Hospital.
