    3. Calyle, Gooramadda, Haines - all near Rutherglen were surveyed, sold, and completely invisible. Carlyle was the largest of these three towns surveyed last century by the government into over one hundred allotments. All allotments were sold and yet the town as never settled, except for the odd blacksmiths shop or hotel. Gooramadda nd Haines suffered a similar fate - people just never ever came to live there. Part of the odl township of Carlyle lies under the vines of All Saints Vineyard.

    3. Hi Denise, Gooramadda (10 km NE of Rutherglen) had a Post Office from 1/10/1879 until 15/12/1965. Nothing that I know of recorded for Carlyle or Haines. There are four recorded postal markings recorded for Gooramadda. The first is a barred numeral, (there are similarities to the 778 canceller for Wooragee, but also huge, and most interesting, differences); its number was 1144. For numbers between 1000 and 1600, the numbers had Roman Numerals for the thousand and hundred part of the cancallation, then Roman Numerals indicated the tens and one's. Gooramadda's looked something like: ------ -- MC -- ------------ -- 44 -- ------ If you come across one for sale, I'm a most interested buyer. The other three markings are more conventional in the sense of what we're used to in (hand applied) postmarks: All had GOORAMADDA in a semicircle as the top of the cancellation; dateline in a straight line across the middle First type had VICTORIA in a semicircle as the bottom of the cancellation; it had no outer frame line and was used as a backstamp for letters postmarked with the MC44 Barred numeral. Second recorded type had an outer frame line and VIC in a semicircle as the bottom of the cancellation. Third recorded type had an outer frame line and VIC. (note the full stop) in a semicircle as the bottom of the cancellation. Neither of these latter cancellations is easy to find. 3. Hi Denise and Mike, As a matter of interest, Gooramadda Park is up for auction. The Border Mail has a half-page write up on it, and if you go to www.elders.com.au/albury you should be able to view it. "The original Gooramadda school house is also located on the property...." So maybe if you buy it Mike, you might find one of the postal markings :-)) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mike Skurrie" <mskurrie@bigpond.net.au> To: <AUS-VIC-NE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, 13 April 2002 12:45 Subject: Re: [AVNE] Towns no longer > Hi Denise, > > Gooramadda (10 km NE of Rutherglen) had a Post Office from 1/10/1879 until > 15/12/1965.
