I don't suppose anyone recalls my posting of some time ago regarding ice in the 1850s and 60s being cut from the frozen lakes of Massachusetts and used as ballast for ships to Aust. Some clever little captains used to sell it in Melbourne and it was then shipped via express wagon (and the mind boggles at anything express those days and especially when it comes to ice) to the gold fields. I found mention yesterday of Beazley and Co bringing ice to Beechworth at XMAS!!! Does anyone know of this Beazley??? The Beechwoth-ites owed much to Beazley it seems. No, I am NOT now researching ice! Denise
