Hi Anne, Thank you from the newspaper story. There are a couple of observations that I would like to bring up from this story. (1) Mr Wilson the owner of "Home Station" Milawa would be Thomas Wilson who married Elizabeth Smith, John Smith's sister. (2) Mr Graham could be John Graham a Scot who came to Australia by way of Canada and a small (117 acers) landowner on the Oxley Plains I understand that Mr Graham and Mr Wilson were in partnership ? (3) Mr D Gardner (Milawa) could have been Wilfred McDonald (Duke) Gardner son of Colin Gardner and Mary Smith. Mary was also John Smith's sister. (4) John Smith's wife and daughter who gave the alarm on the fire would have been Florence Matilda Oliver and Reta Dorothy Smith Kind regards Doug
Hi Doug, I will get the photocopy of the original back from my daughter on Friday and will then send off the records. Sorry it has taken me so long it just seems to go on and on. I am afraid I am not very organized. I thought Graham was George Graham brother of John Graham who was the winegrower who went from Wooragee to Wahgunyah. He seems to have had land all over the place. George Graham (brother of John Graham) and John Wilson were witnesses to James TINNING's marriage in 1868. I have a map of Charles Thornton's land in Wooragee he was James TINNING's wife Mary Jane Thornton's father. Adjacent to the land are properties of John Smith and John Graham. Would this be your John Smith ? Hi Anne You could be right about the Graham's and it sounds very logical. I know that John Smith held quite a bit of land in the Tarrawinge area from what Roger told me, and still holds. He did tell me the name of his main property and we passed another on our run around but silly me I did not write it down. Don't worry about the time that it is taking. Where did you get the map from, I would like to know so that I may get one Thank you Doug ----- Original Message ----- From: "Anne Hollingshead" <hollies@melbpc.org.au> To: <AUS-VIC-NE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, May 02, 2002 12:17 PM Subject: Re: [AVNE] Tarrawingee Flour Mill Fire > Hi Doug, > > I will get the photocopy of the original back from my daughter on Friday and > will then send off the records.
