Hi Jill, this is your William, and his sister Jeanie - M Rosalyn Shennan. (1990). Pioneers of the Ovens & Townsmen of Beechworth. "William ORR, Miner and MLC, Beechworth and Wangaratta. Born near Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland on 13th February, 1843, the son of William ORR, farmer and his wife Jane (nee HUNTER). ORR arrived in Victoria in 1852 with his parents and brothers Thomas and James. He spent a number of years in the Castlemaine and Daylesford areas before settling in Beechworth with his family. Whilst there William joined the firm of J H GRAY and Company, later opening a business in association with the company in Wangaratta where he resided at 'Glenarvon'. ORR became involved in municipal affairs and was a member of the Wangaratta Borough Council from 1875 to 1882 and Mayor from 1877 to 1888. In 1887 he entered into partnership with his brother James as land salesmen in Melbourne. He later joined his father in Queensland where he had mining and pastoral interests. He also spent several years in Broken Hill, Mount Isa and Tasmania where he was a partner in the Mount Lyell copper mine. ORR was a member of the Legislative Council for the Northeast Province from November 1901 to May 1904. He was married in 1878 to Mary FRASER, the daughter of William FRASER of Tallygaroopna, near Shepparton. They had no family. William ORR died at Toorak, Melbourne on 6th February 1929 and is buried in the Boroondara Cemetery. (Argus, 8/2/1929; OMA, 18/6/1887; Wangaratta Chronicle, 9/2/1929; Thomason & Serle, op.cit.)" "William TELFORD, Auctioneer, Beechworth. Born in Stirling, Scotland about 1825, the son of John TELFORD and Jane (nee WRIGHT). TELFORD arrived in Melbourne in 1852 where he remained for two years, working as a salesman. In 1855 he moved to Beechworth where he ran a general store and acted as agent for the firm of Amshel and Company. The following year he moved to Chiltern where he kept a wine and spirit store for two years, returning to Beechworth where he joined the firm of J H GRAY, auctioneers. After GRAY's death in June 1861, he purchased a share in the company and was joined by Mr J G ORR in the 1870s. On 12th July 1864, William TELFORD married GRAY's widow Jeanie Hunter Galt, the daughter of William ORR and Jane (nee HUNTER). Jeanie was born in Ayrshire, Scotland in 1834. ..... Hello Kaye, Well, I must say, this is akin to winning lotto, and thank you so much for looking it up for me, and sending it on. What a wonderful lot of info. about these fellows. What a great and varied life William had, what a shame there were no children? But lots of nieces and nephews, I guess. I've almost got all the main details of the ORR family and their spouses etc., and it's good to be getting into the area of what their lives were like, and what they did for a living etc. I wonder if you could look up another two men for me please?
