Hello Jill, John H Matthews is listed in the Ovens Directory [1857] at the back of Background to Beechworth as a chemist in the Woolshed locality. I did a quick check through the rest of the book and through Carole Wood's book - "A Titan's Field" but couldn't find anything else. The localities within the Directory include Reid's Creek, Woolshed, Devil's Elbow[Lower Woolshed], Sebastopol Flat etc. Hope this helps - it's not much, sorry! Thanks.
