Hi Listers, I have been endeavouring to establish where or what, is or was, SPRING CREEK. I am aware that a SPRING CREEK runs through BEECHWORTH, but have been told that this was also the former name of said town, but I was under the impression that BEECHWORTH was formerly known as MAY DAY HILLS, is this correct ? The reason for my inquiry surrounds the birth of two of my grandfather's siblings, both were born at SPRING CREEK, in the district of BETHANGA, in the shire of TOWONG, in the county of BENAMBRA, one in 1883 the other in 1886. I have the certificates for both births and this is the place of birth stated on both, there is no mention of BEECHWORTH. The informant on both certificates was the father, George RICHARDS, both were recorded by the deputy registrar John C FORSTER. Does anyone know if this was the name of a property in this area, or maybe another small village ? my thoughts were that it was the name of a property as the informant has given his occupation as grazier. Any help is greatly appreciated. Arnie, Albury.
Hello Arnie, I think I can solve your problem. If you use a decent map, about 10 kms up the Tallangatta Valley road south from the Murray valley Highway at Bullioh is a short road that runs westwards through to the road that runs along the Eastern side of the Mitta Mitta Valley that runs past the Yabba Cemetery. This short road, that runs along a creek, is called Spring Creek Rd and it would certainly be in Towong Shire. The house on the Tallangatta end corner has a magnificant garden even today. My grandfather's sister's husband built a home along that road from local bricks which remains in use today and although I didn't drive very far along it, the road seemed quite well used so I imagine a reasonable settlement may have been there in the past. By the way, was the Registrar, Forster or Foster? I know there have been Fosters in the district. Hi Ian, Thanks for the directions, I will have to take a ride up there and have a look for myself. On one schedule the registrar's name appears to be FORSTER and on the other it reads FOSTER, it is most probably the same gentleman. Hello Arnie, Spring Creek was indeed in the Bethanga area. It runs into the Hume. Nothing to do with the one looping around Beechworth. I have a copy of a map of the region showing Spring Creek, if you are interested, I'll send to your home address. Just let me know. regards Denise -----Original Message----- From: aus-vic-ne-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-vic-ne-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of fletch Sent: Tuesday, 18 December 2007 4:11 PM To: AUS-VIC-NE@rootsweb.com Subject: [AVNE] SPRING CREEK Hi Listers, I have been endeavouring to establish where or what, is or was, SPRING CREEK. According to the Vic. Gazetteer the Spring Creek which relates to Beechworth was in the County of DELATITE not BENAMBRA. Hello Arnie, Perhaps the most common feature names in Victoria are Spring Creek and Stony Creek followed closely by Deep Creek, so you have a bit of a challenge. Besides the Spring Creek which was a small "suburb" of Beechworth, there are two other major Spring Creeks in the north east. The first is the creek just 5 km SE of Bethanga that flows into Lake Hume. I don't know of any settlement on that creek that ever had that name (willing to be corrected). The second one had a school that was known as both Wagra and Spring Creek and opened in 1886 so there was obviously a reasonable local population at that time. Details of this place are on the AVNE support website at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVNE/Towns/towns.html Both the above are in the County of Benambra, and both are currently in the shire of Towong. However prior to 1994 both were in the Tallangatta Shire. I am unsure what districts and shires existed in the 1880s, so the District of Bethanga may help or hinder. As you appear to have the birth certificates, what are the other placenames mentioned for the other births on that sheet? If you have their marriage certificates, where do they themselves say they were born. Arnie, Two small mentions of Spring Creek in Early Days of the Upper Murray - Carmody. "In time, Tom's property interests extended to include Mt Falcon and part of Spring Creek." and "Young Tom was probably the most successful of the Whiteheads in his training career, which began at Warbrook and was later transferred to Spring Creek, extending over the years from 1899 to 1933."
