    3. Hi Wes, Thanks for the tip re Legacy. I think that's the way to go. I had Family Tree version 1 (!) and I really liked it then decided to up-date to Version 4, and I hate it. Good to hear from you - you may remember me from my old Wagga days, Apex and the Riverina Jazz Band! Hope you're keeping well. I assume we've BOTH joined the retired and footloose and fancy free! 3. Hi Faye, Thanks for your messages. Your William KOCH doesn't seem to be connected. I have Christiane Fredericka KOCH born ca 1810 in Langenau Saxony, daughter of Johann Gottfried KOCH and Christina Sophia MELZGER. She married Johann Carl Gotlobb POTZSCH and had about a dozen children, including my great great grandmother Amelia (aka Emilie Wilhelmine), in Gahlenz and Grosshatsmanndorf. Christiane didn't migrate to Australia and there is some dispute about whether Johann, her husband, came out for a visit. She died on 23 Jun 1859 in Grosshartmannsdorf after falling inot a quarry (suuposedly somwhat inebriated). We don't know of any siblings for her so trying to determine if the other Willam KOCH is ours is proving rather difficult!!! Hope this helps. Regards, Cathy I really need to try and contact a connection who did a lot of work in the past but at this stage he's not contactable via email. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Faye & Kai" <fairdinks@web.de> To: <aus-vic-ne@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 24, 2007 11:46 PM Subject: Re: [AVNE] KOCH Hi Cathy I must have missed your first post Cathy, or it hasn't come through the list to me yet. I have found out a little bit more about my William (Johann Wilhelm) KOCH since last year. In the book 'From Hamburg to Hobson's Bay' is listed a Johann Wilhelm KOCH arriving aboard the ship 'Dockenhuden' arriving in Melbourne of the 21 April 1849. He is listed as being 22 years old, born in Paderborn, was Roman Catholic and was a Shoemaker by trade. A kind lister looked up the original shipping record for me and sent me the information that on the shipping record is listed a Wilhelm KOCH, 22, Paderburn, Roman Catholic, Shoemaker and a note that his age upon departure from Hamburg was 29. I have not yet seen the original documents for myself. According to my Johann Wilhelm KOCH's marriage certificate, he married Charlotte Pauline RUDOLPH on the 17th August 1850 in the Independent Chapel, Melbourne. Witnesses were George EISERT and Gottlieb KNOBLOCH. On the birth certificate of William and Charlotte's 3rd child, William KOCH, in January 1856 William was the informant and has stated he was 35 years old at the time and was born Paderborn, Westphalia, Prussia (his age would be correct with his age upon departure in Hamburg in the note for his shipping record). He has also signed the register, which matches his signature on his marriage certificate and there is a note in the column that 'John William KOCH is the name of the father.' The information on the birth certificate matches the information from the shipping record so I'm pretty sure that the Johann Wilhelm (or Wilhelm) KOCH that arrived on the Dockenhuden in 1849 is the same as my Johann Wilhelm KOCH. I'm still looking for his naturalisation papers, although I have found a possibility on the NSW state records website. My William Koch is the Johann Wilhelm KOCH who died at Cashel 9th March 1909 and is buried at Devenish Cemetery. His death certificate is for Johann Wilhelm KOCH and his headstone in the cemetery is under the name of William KOCH. Another family member found information nearly 20 years ago now that Johann's parent's names were William and Mary. She is currently trying to find where she found/heard that information. I'm hoping to start tracing the family more in Germany now that I've found out which town Johann came from. I have also had a quick look to see where Grosshatmannsdorf is/was. I have found a Grosshartmannsdorf (Großhartmannsdorf) not far from Dresden, Saxony, Germany. Bit of a distance between Paderborn and Großhartmannsdorf but not an impossibility. Hope this information is helpful Cathy and I would be interested if you have any more information about your Christiane KOCH. 3. Hi again Cathy Your original message finally arrived. I'm curious now to know if you find out about another Willie KOCH in the Devenish area. I'm also wondering if there are any other cemeteries in the area where they could possibly be buried. I've just been through all the family cemetery photos I took when I made a whirlwind visit to Victoria last October and the only KOCH headstones in Devenish cemetery, that I could find anyway, where mine (unless I overlooked one). I didn't find any KOCH headstones at Cashel cemetery and there are also no KOCH's mentioned buried at Dookie cemetery. There is a Thomas SPRIGGS buried at Dookie cemetery. I don't have a photo of that one, but he is the only SPRIGGS listed on the list of people buried at the cemetery (the cemetery has them listed within the grounds with a map of where to find them, extremely helpful).
