Dear Peter, Thank you very much for checking this database of men who fought in the Boer War. Apparently the whole business of being in the Army in Australia is quite complicated. An archivist at the National Archives of Australia (Melbourne), where they hold the pre-1901 records, was telling me that men "raised" from a land-holding such as Bowna could have been absorbed into the Australian colonial army. But they could also have gone on their own to South Africa and fought there -- on EITHER side. They could also have beeen absorbed into the British army. Do you think that in the two latter cases, the man would be included in the database you consulted? That is, how super-complete is it? Two other possibilities are that Mr. Bonat could have been a professional soldier, but not fought in any wars, or that he could have fought in the Boxer Rebellion, or even in the earlier Sudan War. The archivist is going to try and check out some of these possibilities for me. However, his wife delivered a baby earlier than anticipated, so he took some time off. Perhaps we should consult this site, it tells you all you ever wanted to know about the geology of Australia. Longest river - which it says is the Murray, highest mountain, tallest waterfall etc...... http://www.Ga.gov.au/education/facts/landforms/longrive.htm regards Loretta -------Original Message------- From: Shane Ryan Date: 23/02/2007 10:06:18 PM To: aus-vic-ne@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [AVNE] AUS-VIC-NE Digest, Vol 2, Issue 39 Dear Peter, Yes, sorry my email was badly expressed. The Darling River is, as I understand it, officially, and actually, the longest river in Australia. Murray is number two, and the Murrumbidgee is number three. In Victoria, the Goulburn River is the longest (I hail from Shepparton originally, so I like to remind people of this!) The Murray, although it begins in Victoria, and ends in South Australia, flows mainly in New South Wales. And, they all need more water!! Regards, Shane. Shane L.J. Hi Carren, QLD records, are Queensland birth, marriage and death records registered in Queensland and are available on cd or online. I have had a look in the Victorian 1889 -1901, 1902-1913 & 1914-1920 indexes for you but have not come up with any thing. Am yet to look in Vic. Pioneers pre 1889. Peter and I live in the same area and have similar interests in research, so hopefully some body will help out with your Mr. Bonat. But in all practical terms it flows evenly in both NSW and Vic. And because it rises here Vic has the longest stretch of it! A bit of trivia, the Murray and the Tambo (a wholy owned Vic river!!) rise only a short distance apart in the Great Dividing Range but flow down opposite sides of the mountains. Peter, the older of the tworobbos
I have Qld Births/Deaths/ and Marriages 1829 to 1914. So if your enquiry is within that range I can assist. In a few weeks time the Qld Government will have the BMD's online to 1929, commencement date yet to be announced but very soon. Dear Peter, Yes, sorry my email was badly expressed. Shane L.J. Dear Peter Ross and all, I saw in another listserv a query from someone who asked, "Does someone have the QLD records who wouldn't mind doing a look-up?" The person had been unable to find anything in the Birth/Marriage/Death registers. Can anyone tell me what the QLD records are? And does anyone on this listserv have those records and would someone be willing to check them for the Mr. Bonat for whom I am searching? If so, please let me know and I will summarize the information we know about him. Thank you very much! Hey Shane, Come to think of it, you're right. But I wouldn't want to paddle either of them, especially at the moment! But are you saying that OFFICIALLY the longest river is the Darling? This Bowna query is intriguing. I hope we can resolve something!
