Hello Jennifer, I know of a lady who died there in 1902 and she was brought back to Euroa to be buried. I guess it would depend on the family's financial situation. regards Loretta -------Original Message------- From: Kerry Date: 04/02/07 11:53:17 To: aus-vic-ne@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [AVNE] female patients at Beecworth Asylum Jennifer from what I know having an uncle there during the 1940,s when he died it was up to his family where he was buried, hence my uncle was buried in Myrtleford, where his mother lived. Hello Judy, Mum thinks that the Hotel in Everton used to be run by Bill Smith when it was known as Keady's Hotel (now Everton Hotel). The phone number for the Everton Hotel is 57270232. regards Dianne Dean
I perhaps did not explain myself very well when I requested information for my list of tunnellers. I am hoping to gather personal information about the person. This information will later be put on a website and a memorial erected to these tunnellers. Thank you Mike and Tia. I am interested in your posting re tunnellers in WW1. My interest is the idea of tunnelling was generated by and initially lead by Sir Edgeworth David, Australia first professor of Geology, who went to the south pole when he was 50, turned 60 while at WW1 and retired to my local area. His biography is well worth reading. I do not have it but from memory he formed a group of tunnellers and took them to WW1 they were soon abandoned and absorbed in other regiments but the idea continued and he told them where to tunnel. It is a very good biography but as a local historian I could see a number of possible local connections his biographer had not commented on. Hence my interest in who were tunnellers and what if any were the connections and how did they become tunnellers. Hi Janine Have you tried contacting the La Trobe University that now occupies the site as a conference centre? Or I wonder if anything is held by the Department of Human Services as I think they would have been responsible for closing the asylum? regards Dianne
Hi Janine The information would be at the PROV. There may be a cut off date for privacy reasons. I don't know how you could access it without visiting. On their website they have digitised some of these records, but they stop at 1912. Hi Judy, William Smith rings a bell - I live in and grew up in Everton Upper and Bill Smith seems familiar. I'll ask my mum tomorrow (Mothers being the repository of all knowledge). Do you have any other details I can cross-check against? And what is it you want to know? regards Dianne
I am pretty sure they would have an inquest record at PROV especially since the woman I am trying to find died in the asylum, but I dont have a name for her which makes it very hard, only an approximate age [mid to late 40's give or take], the fact that she committed suicide [hanging we think] in the asylum, and the timeframe of between the wars. It is going to be an uphill battle trying to find her but worth a try. I know she had a son who died possibly by accidental drowning around the age of 10-12, and her grief from losing him was the reason she was committed by her husband in the first place. I also have a few more details of her life but nothing concrete, and no names, so it will be a matter of gathering what information I can and sorting through it in the hope I can pinpoint her...janine ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jennifer Crockett" <jcrockett@optusnet.com.au> To: <aus-vic-ne@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 01, 2007 10:08 PM Subject: Re: [AVNE] female patients at Beecworth Asylum > Hi Janine > > The information would be at the PROV. Hi Judy, I am probably telling you something that you already know, however the National Archives has pretty much finished their project to digitise all WWI military records. www.naa.gov.au search by name and try a date range of 1910 - 1930 which should cut down the responses. Of the 2 I had a quick peek at, Joseph CARNS file is 17 pgs and he survived the war, George TIBBETTS file is 60 pgs and he died of wounds in Belgium I think so its off to http://www.cwgc.org/ the commonwealth war graves commission for him. Interrestingly his military will is on the file and it lists his daughter as beneficiary. anyway I hope this has been useful in some way and all the best in your quest.
