    3. Thanks Peter, as usual you are right - I've just checked the book you refer to below and yes, it was obviously some sort of mens' club. Oh by the way, if anyone is interested in the history of Beechworth prison I got hold of a book yesterday called 'H.M. Prison Beechworth, The End of an Era, 1856 - 2004.' It is an interesting little book and is not terribly complimentary of Castieau in parts. The book was published by Corrections Victoria in March 2006. My only criticism would be that while there is a Table of Contents there is no Index which just drives me crazy. 3. There was a Garrick club in London a men club, founded 1831, I would suspect the Beechworth one was modeled on or a spoof of the London club. Google Garrick club. The club still exists in London. There may be reference to the Beechworth Garrick club in their archives. Regards Elizabeth Roberts -----Original Message----- Today's Topics: 1. All such creatures were regarded as "noxious animals" by newcomers. The OMA was not averse to doing a bit of a "beat-up" on these sensational stories either, were they? At least it demonstrated the value of "strong trousers and a strong pair of boots" for fellers in 1863. More value even than a shed. I hope the Burke Museum fed the poor thing at least? 3. Funny to think about it now, but it could well have been a Blue Tongue Lizard! 3. Hi Alan, If you like could you e-mail me off list at ahanson8@bigpond.com and give the name of the 'Boss' etc. so I could follow up in the O & M. I have just posted the O & M article on the list. And thanks for the info re Rosehill etc. Cheers Anne -----Original Message----- From: aus-vic-ne-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-vic-ne-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Alan French Sent: Sunday, 1 July 2007 4:05 PM To: aus-vic-ne@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [AVNE] Births,Marriage & Deaths from Ovens & Murray Advertiser Saturday June231863 Hello again Anne, Thanks for your reply to my post, re the snake perhaps it may have been a copperhead mistaken for a death adder, they are a quiet sort of a snake will just lie there while you walk over or past them, I remember them from the days when I did a bit of apple picking in Stanley many years ago. "Rosehill"? roses must have been popular in the early days of settlement, fairly easy to transport and propagate, and handled the climate fairly well , also they were probably a memory of "Home".The Nankervis property at Wooragee " was originally "Rosebank"probably from when Graham and Wilson built the stone house in the 1860,s. Anne somewhere in the Beechworth papers there is the story of the gruesome murder in what I think was a wine shanty or similar at Wooragee, seems that on occasions when the "Boss" was away his wife had a gentleman friend who came and "helped out". Unfortunately the "Boss" arrived home without prior notice of his coming and found a situation a little more than friendly, as a result he was murdered, chopped up with a tomahawk, and cremated in his own fireplace. Edgar Passey ,I think, has a reference to it in one of his more recent books. A good friend had the story and was going to give me a copy, unfortunately as with so many of my "mates" she is no longer with us to dabble in history. Back to the roses they were responsible for the sweet briars that infested the Wooragee valley right up to the 1940,s when 2 4 D became available, apparently they came from the rootstocks used to propagate the roses. It appears that Mr. Farrell, whilst felling a tree, felt something as if pulling at the bottom of his trousers. At first, believing it preceded from a branch of underwood, he took no notice of it, but on finding this pulling repeated he turned round and to his horror, perceived this deadly viper biting at his heel. 3. Hi Alan, Nice to hear from you. I'm hoping Ronda has seen your e-mail as I know Blewitt is one of her names so hopefully she'll be able to help re the possible Blewitt-Brewer connection. I spent a lot of hours at the Burke Museum this week peering at the 1863 O & M microfilm - that is where the bits and pieces I posted came from. I also have one which haven't typed up yet where a dairyman Daniel Farrell had a narrow escape from being bitten by a death adder. Death adder is the newspaper's words not mine. This apparently took place in Sebastopol in the middle of Winter. What sort of snake might it have been? Have you any idea why the Rosehill Dairy was given the name Rosehill - just curious. I will certainly ask to have a look at the photo of the Brewer home and family the next time I am at the Burke. 3. Hello Faye, I am assuming (hoping?) I wasn't rude to you but it seems I didn't reply to this email. I haven't done much with the KOCHs. I did email a first cousin once removed but he didn't know much either. I am in the process of saving the emails I want from the last 6 months on to a flash disc and will keep yours. I have lost emails in the past with computer crashes and have tried not to stress too much about them but I'd rather know I've got a copy somewhere! I don't think we are connected to Thomas Spriggs which seems strange as there were heaps and heaps of Spriggs I am connected to! I do not know of any other KOCHs but have just realised I should forward your email on to a 3rd cousin and see if she can help. I'm curious now to know if you find out about another Willie KOCH in the Devenish area. I'm also wondering if there are any other cemeteries in the area where they could possibly be buried. I've just been through all the family cemetery photos I took when I made a whirlwind visit to Victoria last October and the only KOCH headstones in Devenish cemetery, that I could find anyway, where mine (unless I overlooked one). I didn't find any KOCH headstones at Cashel cemetery and there are also no KOCH's mentioned buried at Dookie cemetery. There is a Thomas SPRIGGS buried at Dookie cemetery. I don't have a photo of that one, but he is the only SPRIGGS listed on the list of people buried at the cemetery (the cemetery has them listed within the grounds with a map of where to find them, extremely helpful). Amelia POTZSCH (various spellings) married Ernst Heinrich THIES on 10 Sep 1854 in Melbourne. He died, and in 1859, also in Melbourne, she married John SPRIGGS. They moved to Devenish where they became quite well known. Family lore has it that Willie KOCH (which one?) was Amelia's cousin. Amelia's parents were Johann POTZSCH and Christiane KOCH from Grosshatmannsdorf in Saxony. Does anyone know of the KOCHs in NE Victoria and where they came from??
