So I am now looking for the death and burial of Kate Harding Bone, whose husband James Furnell died 1909 in Whitfield. Wonder if she is with him? The last child was born in 1875 in Geelong, so I have 35 years to account for Elizabeth . >i > > > >>>Elizabeth, >>> >>>Now it is making sense - I know Edi and Upper Edi very well - it is God's >>>own country in fact. I am looking for help regarding the above families Most of the Dalkin families lived in the area of Stawell and some of the Bond lines were there for a short time also I have Jane Dalkin married to George Bond and have lost them to all time I think. Found their children from the CD's for Victorian BMD's etc but as to find where Jane Bond and George went I have no idea. Have been given a death date for George Bond as 1893 but where is the question.!! Checked the Victorian. NSW. SA deaths without luck and even the online Karrakatta Cemetery data base no luck!! perhaps they went to QLD or even New Zealand !!?? I don't know The Bake family were from Devon & Cornwall and some how the name changed to Husband !! Robert Bake married Susanah Wolland their daughter Anna Maria Bake married George Richards Bond 1842 they had 5 children in London then came to Victoria. George Richards Bond died 1887 Melbourne and his d/ c has no parents so I am stumped there If anyone can help out on the Dalkin lines would be most appreciative or even the others. Never known a vanishing family as these !! Thanks Elaine -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.
Hello Eliz Hyem, is just on the Wangaratta side of King Valley township, all that remains is the Railway sign and the cemetery (also known as the Whitfield Cemetery) a short drive from there and you come to Edi. The cemetery is still in use I believe. Good Afternoon All, I was at the Burke Museum today looking at the Argus Newspaper - In the 5 Oct 1863 edition on Page 7 there was an article which stated that Christina BELL had been arrested at Jamieson by a Sergeant BABER for the attempted murder of Albert KOSCHITZKY in September 1863. Albert was the proprietor of German's Hotel at Jamieson. It seems that Christina worked as a barmaid at the German's Hotel and had a rather passionate attachment to Albert. She stabbed him with a rather large carving knife but he survived. Am still trying to ascertain what happened at the subsequent court case in Beechworth but have had no success so far. Good Afternoon All I am wondering if anyone knows anything about a PRENDERGAST (given name unknown) who was a lawyer/barrister in Beechworth in 1863. Unfortunately that is all I know about him but am keen to know more. In fact, after looking at every possible resource I can think of, I'm desperate, so any help would be greatly appreciated. In my husband's family there is a report of an attempted suicide that made The Argus in 1874. Many of the men in the family are known to have enjoyed drinking so the current generation find this story quite amusing. Catherine. The Argus, Tuesday September 8, 1874 A curious attempt at suicide was made yesterday morning. A seafaring man named Henry Ludwick, who had been stopping for sometime past at the Carriers' Arms Hotel, King-street, West Melbourne, on Sunday secretly abstracted from a case a bottle of whiskey, took it to his room, knocked the neck off, and drank nearly the whole of the contents. While suffering from the effects of the drink he tried to go downstairs, but fell and hurt his leg. He was told by the landlady that he would have to quit the place and go to his friends who were better able to keep him than the hotelkeeper. At about half-past 6 the next morning, blood was observed dropping from the ceiling of the room under his, and the landlady found that Ludwick was bleeding from a wound in his right arm, which he had evidently himself inflicted with a razor. He had previously tired a handkerchief round his arm. The wound was cut across the prominent vein on the inside of the elbow, and Dr Burke, who was called in and stopped the bleeding, said that Ludwick appeared to have some surgical knowledge, from the manner in which he made the cut. Ludwick was given in charge of the Hotham police, and remanded to gaol for seven days for medical treatment. The wound does not appear likely to result seriously. Ludwick, who is 64 years old, has been master of a ship, but of late has been without money. It is supposed that depression of spirits, following as a reaction after the excessive drinking, caused him to attempt suicide.
Tia I have a few who died in accidents and the newspaper coverage is interesting. I had one died in an factory accident in Stawell in 1911. The newspaper covered the story with every gory detail the next issue. The issue after that covered who was at the funeral and the order of the procession; I even have a photo of that! And the details of the inquest. I also have the inquest papers. I would not say the person below Foolishly did not seek medical treatment, as in those days people did not run to a doctor for everything. I have a little girl who was badly burnt, her dress caught fire. The doctor saw her at the time of the accident but did not go back until she had died 2 days later. For some reason there is no inquest for this death but I was surprised that that 4yo lay in a bed suffering from burns to the lower extremities for 2 days with just her family to care for her. It just gives us another look into how our ancestors tried to survive Oops just looked down at all previous e-mails and realize you were probably referring to the fellow in Canberra. The thing with death adders is that their bite can kill before you can get help, he may not have had a chance to get to medical help, unless he was a fool! Carmel.
Yes it is dreadful, the good samaratin and all that. However it should be noted that he foolishly did not seek medical treatment for the bite. I wonder how may of our ancestors were involved in preventable deaths? - Excluding Wars of course. Some of the deaths recorded on my certificates are interesting. I presume that the more "bizzare" or accidental would garner the more news paper coverage. I have a great great uncle, James Patrick Cummins who drowned at Benalla along with a work colleague in a boating accident in 1908. He was a Police Constable and the accident garnered quite a bit of newspaper activity over 3 newspapers. I am about to go looking for the death of my G Grand father who was a jockey and who died during a race from a fall. School holidays has interrupted that line of research. Any one else with deaths/accidents that make the paper? Hello Ronda and Anne, Thanks Ronda for the information and thanks Anne for the interesting research,a little more knowledge of those forgotten ones who were part of my family connections.Would Hannah have been a sister of John Brewer, family writings tell of him bringing his two brothers out from Cornwall , settling William at Wooragee, and Arthur at Leneva, but nothing regarding a sister.According to info that I have John Brewer was born in Cornwall in1832 and married Charlotte Warren in Malvern, ( Melbourne) in 1854 having arrived in Australia in 1849. My Great Grandfather George Edwin French was born 6/3 / 1829 at Penzance ,and married Jane Warren born 4 /5 / 1829 at Madron Cornwall on 15/ 5 / 1852. Hannah would have been born about 1836, sister to John?. Ronda regarding Blewett/ Paull families are they the ones I have known around Yackandandah for many ,many years?. Lake Harvey? did know where that was once, somewhere around Yackandandah.I have a bit of Brewer history if you are interested including a couple of letters from Cousin Will White son of Charlotte, we kept in touch some years ago, unfortunately I think that he too is no longer with us. Anne re the "Boss" unfortunately I have nothing to help you with date, etc,was always going to get it from my friend, I did ring her once for a bit of a yarn ,she said she would send me a copy but what arrived was the story of the Faithfull massacre. I do not know the name of the Penzig book either,I had a free read of it in a book shop in Albury, seem to remember that the lady was chopped up with a tomahawk about a year later. Thanks once more, Regards Alan French
