    1. [AVNE] Lockhart's gap
    2. Ian Foster
    3. Hi all NE Folk, Does anyone know who Lockhart's Gap is named after? I have just uncovered that my GGGrandfather married a widow Margaret Lockhart and have yet another trail to chase. I don't think there are any Lockhart descendents. 1. [AVNE] Mrs Shelly Mitta Mitta
    2. Kath Raulings
    3. I am looking for any information on Elizabeth Shelly who may have acted as a midwife in the Mitta area around the 1860s, 70s or 80s. If anyone has any birth certificates registered in the Mitta, would they be able to look at them to see if a Mrs Shelly was listed as the informant or midwife and let me know the name of the baby, its birth date and father's name. Mrs Shelly died in 1890 and is buried in Mitta Cemetery. Any clues as to her whereabout in the time period would be most appreciated. Kath R

    1. [AVNE] Buckland Goldfields

    3. This is something that has intrigued me also. My Great Grandmother, Margaret Moran with two children and others nomads travelled from the Goulburn area (Taralga) to the Buckland Goldfields in the early 1850's, according to legend. She married in St Joseph's Church, Beechworth on 17 August, 1855 one of her fellow travellers, Patrick Skehan. The father of her two children was a Patrick Maher, of whom there is no trace. He, also according to legend or secrecy, died en route of the 'flu, was killed by aborigines, or what. My theory is that he already had a family and was having a bit on the side, so to speak. My Great Grandmother was a spinster when she married Patrick Skehan and later had five more children. I have heard that she ran a soup kitchen or some sort of similar boutique food outlet at Tarrawingee. Tarrawingee is closer to Beechworth than is the township of Buckland. The Skehans around the Wangaratta area who would be all relations of mine would, I guess, be descendants. How can both these towns be seen as the main regional cent for Buckland when it is so far away and many valleys in between. I have just purchased the Victorian Probate index 1853-1888, and after an initial setback in which I didn't read the article description properly and received in the mail a set of microfiche rather than a cd ( the quick ebay purchase of a twenty dollar microfiche reader soon sorted out that minor problem), I can now offer lookups for listers. The location of a probate number then allows the will in question to be looked up online at the prov.vic site where old wills are progressively being added for online viewing. I have tonight downloaded and read the wills of some of my Bourkes and a Hughan- fascinating reading! I have a weekend of watching children play rugby, but should have plenty of spare time in the next week to get any lookups done. Jen

    1. [AVNE] Midling Bank Thanks
    2. Hec Alcock
    3. To all those people who responded, my sincere thanks. Am a bit rusty at this, just getting back to finding my lot again. I have just retired (again) and hopefully have some free time? I should have looked for similar names The first map I used showed Middingbank, another showed Middlingbank. And as Jackie indicated, it is at the Southern end of Eucumbene. Google searches will bring up both names. Still unsure I found a great site for NSW place names http://www.gnb.nsw.gov.au/ . It looks like Middlingbank is the official title. Confirmation from Elizabeth and others that Manaroo was an early name for Monaro seals the case The NSW BDM baptism cert is typed and it seems likely that in the transcription error may have been made and a "d" was left out, or perhaps in 1844 it only had one "d" Cheers and thanks again Hec

    3. The 1848 Wells Gazetteer has a long section on this it is modern day Monaro. Described in 1849 as a squatting district adjacentto the counties of St. Vincent and Murray keeping right of the bank of the Murrumbidgee. In 1848 it had 1916 inhabitants 1321males and 595 females living in 185 houses. There was no mention of Midling Bank Regards Elizabeth Roberts
