Hi, I have an Ellen Catherine Jackson born 1896 at Pipe Clay Lead, Shire of Rutherglen and her mother, Brita Jackson (nee Johanson, born Finland) who died in 1904 at Garibaldi Hill, Shire of Rutherglen. Does anyone know the location of Pipe Clay Lead and Garibaldi Hill? From what I can tell they're to do with gold mining? According to my mother, Ellen told her that her father, William John Jackson (born Lancashire, England) worked for the railways and the family lived in a railway tent. Were railway tents likely to be found at these locations? Thanks very much for any help you can give me. Regards Olwen

Hi Robyn, At one stage when I wasn't working I ordered Thomas KANE's inquest, and transcribed it as best I could - some of the writing was very hard to understand. Ian I've repied to you off list. I think Lockhart's Gap is named after CGN Lockhart and his brother Norman who were among the first squatters to take up a run at Tallandoon. Their application for pre-emptive right which was unsuccessful is adjacent to where the current Lockhart's Gap road joins the Mitta Valley Road. They used this route over the hills with bullock waggons when they went to Melbourne for supplies. CGN Lockhart was a Commissioner for Crown Lands in NSW and was a competent surveyor. I've been researching the Lockhart family, although I'm not related, but would welcome any further information on CGN Lockhart (Charles George Norman). He retired from Wentworth to Tumut, and may have gone back to Europe, but no-one seems to know where he died. Kath R
