Good Evening Am wondering if anyone is researching John Arthur MARTIN who died at Beechworth aged 62 in 1923. His wife's name was Rosemary SCOTT and they had 1 child, that is Rosemary Ethelwyn MARTIN born Clifton Hill, Vic. in 1917. John's father's name was John Arthur, his mother's name Amelia (family name unknown). Thanks. Anne Hanson No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Good Afternoon All, I am helping out with a Burke Museum Family History research request. It concerns one James REGAN, brickmaker, (Roman Catholic) who was in Beechworth about 1857. There is a family story which says and I quote: James had dealing with Henry O'Farrell over the sale of bricks which went to court and James lost all his money. The same O'Farrell who later tried to assassinate the Duke of Edinburgh. Am wondering if anyone can help with the story above please. Anne No virus found in this outgoing message. Amanda, I'm not sure what the name Minnie is short for but the Burke Museum at Beechworth holds information on a Margaret Hennessy. Hello listers, Graeme Massey (with the help of students at the Warracknabeal Secondary College) has produced a very nice looking book giving details of the Light Horsemen charge on Beersheba in WWI (the last great cavalry charge). The full title of the Book is Beersheba : The men of the 4th Light Horse Regiment who charged on the 31st October 1917. ISBN 978-0-9750268-3-0. The book has a paragraph or two of the basic details of each of the soldiers of the 4th LH (mainly from their war records). An example (for John Henry ALLEN) is shown below. The book also lists the members by the areas that they lived/worked in at the time of enlistment. I have included the list for the north east below. Also I have included a list of those (from the NE) who did not take place in the charge (due to injury, etc.). If you would like a summary of an individual's entry, please email me privately, NOT by this list, today (Saturday) only. Cheers Peter ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Example of an entry ALLEN John Henry (Jack) Trooper 2456 Born at Toronto, Canada in 1886. He worked as a hairdresser at Seymour. He enlisted at Castlemaine on 3 January 1916. At his medical he was 5'6" tall, weighed 116 pounds, had brown hair, blue eyes and a triangle tattoo on his right arm. Church of England. Married with one child. Next of kin was his wife, Sylvia Frances Allen of Seymour. Left Melbourne on "Clan MacCorquodale" 6 May 1916 with the 17th reinforcements. He was taken on strength of the 4th LHR at Ferry Post on 25 February 1917 from the training regiments at Tel-el-Kebir and El Ferdan. On 9 September he was attached to 11 ALHR at Fukhari where he was trained as a forward scout. He rejoined the regiment on 20 October 1917 and was detached to 4th Brigade HQ as a scout. He served during the Palestine campaign until he was killed in action at Es Salt on 4 May 1918. His body was not recovered. His name is commemorated on Panel 58 at Jerusalem War Memorial Cemetery. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List of those living/working in what the book describes as the North East at the time of their enlistment. Hi Peter thanks for the information and the offer of the photos, I would love them, Ernest Sharp was my G G Grandmothers brother. I new he was a builder in Albury and when I went there with my Mother about 7yrs ago we did actually go to the old town hall to have a look. With some help from my sister (who lives in QLD) we are going to write a book on the family and I am trying to find out as much information as I can, on what my families in Albury did. They where mostly dairy farmers, my Great Aunt Anne Gray married John Haberfield, the Haberfield's used to own the dairy that Pauls now owns (I think). I still have a lot of Sharp and Gray relatives in Albury, although most of them are not much help when it comes to information. Thanks again Sam -----Original Message----- From: aus-vic-ne-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-vic-ne-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Peter Ross Sent: Saturday, 13 October 2007 7:43 PM To: aus-vic-ne@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [AVNE] New to the list Hi Sam, In 1974 I bought a house in Albury which had been built by a SHARP, but I (stupidly!) sold it and moved away in 1980. For the life of me I can't remember his first name but it will come to me. (It did... his name was Ernest) He built the house for himself and family, some time in the 1930s (and boy, is it BUILT!). I loved the place. It is at 511 Garden Street , Albury. I had a copy of the original plan submitted to the Council...I framed it, and sold it with the house, so it still could be with the present owners. I have photos of it of course if you'd like. Ern Sharp built the Albury Town Hall in 1908, and it still stands as the Albury Art Gallery. I'm not able to help you further, but if you like to contact the Albury Historical Society (C/o the Albury Library & Museum, Kiewa St Albury 2640) I'm sure they can help.
