Hi Ian, Thanks for the directions, I will have to take a ride up there and have a look for myself. On one schedule the registrar's name appears to be FORSTER and on the other it reads FOSTER, it is most probably the same gentleman. Seasons greetings Peter, Thanks for the information it is greatly appreciated. The child born in 1883 never married but I do have her death certificate and it states place of birth as Bethanga Vic., I'm still waiting for the marriage and death certificates for the other child born 1886, but I'm sure that will also state Bethanga Vic as being the place of birth. On the 1883 certificate all places of birth are listed as Bethanga, shire of Towong, county of Benambra, except one where the place of birth is Talgarno. The 1886 Schedule has all births listed as being Bethanga. Thanks to you and Ian Foster, I now have a far better idea of where this family lived in those early years. Hi all, I think Russell who replied earlier to your inquiry can give an acurate locality for the Yabba Cemetery. It's been a while since I was there. Hello Arnie, Perhaps the most common feature names in Victoria are Spring Creek and Stony Creek followed closely by Deep Creek, so you have a bit of a challenge. Besides the Spring Creek which was a small "suburb" of Beechworth, there are two other major Spring Creeks in the north east. The first is the creek just 5 km SE of Bethanga that flows into Lake Hume. I don't know of any settlement on that creek that ever had that name (willing to be corrected). The second one had a school that was known as both Wagra and Spring Creek and opened in 1886 so there was obviously a reasonable local population at that time. Details of this place are on the AVNE support website at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~surreal/AVNE/Towns/towns.html Both the above are in the County of Benambra, and both are currently in the shire of Towong. However prior to 1994 both were in the Tallangatta Shire. I am unsure what districts and shires existed in the 1880s, so the District of Bethanga may help or hinder. As you appear to have the birth certificates, what are the other placenames mentioned for the other births on that sheet? If you have their marriage certificates, where do they themselves say they were born. Cheers Peter ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ At 05:10 PM 18/12/2007 +1100, you wrote: >Hi Listers, > >I have been endeavouring to establish where or what, is or was, SPRING CREEK. > >I am aware that a SPRING CREEK runs through BEECHWORTH, but have >been told that this was also the former name of said town, but I was >under the impression that BEECHWORTH was formerly known as MAY DAY >HILLS, is this correct ? > >The reason for my inquiry surrounds the birth of two of my >grandfather's siblings, both were born at SPRING CREEK, in the >district of BETHANGA, in the shire of TOWONG, in the county of >BENAMBRA, one in 1883 the other in 1886. Hello Arnie, I think I can solve your problem. If you use a decent map, about 10 kms up the Tallangatta Valley road south from the Murray valley Highway at Bullioh is a short road that runs westwards through to the road that runs along the Eastern side of the Mitta Mitta Valley that runs past the Yabba Cemetery. This short road, that runs along a creek, is called Spring Creek Rd and it would certainly be in Towong Shire. The house on the Tallangatta end corner has a magnificant garden even today. My grandfather's sister's husband built a home along that road from local bricks which remains in use today and although I didn't drive very far along it, the road seemed quite well used so I imagine a reasonable settlement may have been there in the past. By the way, was the Registrar, Forster or Foster? I know there have been Fosters in the district. Hi to all, I'm new to the list and would like to submit the names I'm researching : Richards / Donoghue and variations / Cadman / Nugent / Nicholls / Doran. All these people had, at one stage of their lives, something to do with the property " Opossum Point Station " or " Yellow Boy Run " as it was also known, south east of Tooma Nsw. The book " First Settlement of the Upper Murray " written by Dr Arthur Andrews, mentions my 2x great grandfather, Thomas Richards, as having taken up the run in 1840 or 1841, then dying before 1848, the article then goes on to mention his wife, Mary nee Nugent and her second husband James Donahoo ( sic ) and the fact that the lease was still in her name as late as 1889, and that her eldest son was one of the first children to be born on the Upper Murray as early as 1842. Although I'm very grateful for Dr Andrews for including this information in his book, I have been able to disprove most of it. I'm trying to locate the three most important pieces of documention for this couple : 1 ) A date and place of marriage between Thomas and Mary, no registration can be found in either of the most probable indexes, NSW and Victoria. ( I have looked at the other States ) 2 ) A date and place of birth for both, no registration found in any index. 3 ) A date and place of death for both, no registration found in any index. The other aspect of this search is that if there are no registrations of birth for both, then that may mean they were either convicts or children of assisted or unassisted immigrants, but for the life of me I can find no evidence of their respective arrivals in the Colony. Of course if they were children I would have no idea when they arrived, not knowing their parents names, and they do not appear on any convict list I have checked that fits the time frame, although that time frame is one that I have set myself. The facts that I have proven : Thomas Richards died 4th October 1850 at Opossum Point Station ( Source NSW Probate Index ) but still no registration found. His wife Mary nee Nugent died 8th January 1890 at Opossum Point Station under the name of her second husband, Donoghue ( Source NSW Probate Index ) but still no registration found. The couple, Thomas and Mary, had four children, the eldest was a girl : Mary Ann born 12th August 1841 at Courabyra, just north of Tumbarumba, the others born 1844, 1847 and 1850, the last being my great grandfather James George, aka George. If anyone has any information regarding either the family or the property, or any suggestions as to where I could continue my search, I would be very grateful. I do apologise for the length of this missive. Regards Arnie Fletcher Albury Nsw
