    3. Has anyone heard of the Beechworth Ladies' Benevolent Society which helped needy people with food clothing blankets and firewood? Also another ladies thng was Women's Christian Temperance Union both had a Minister chairing them. I am hoping someone has found information on these groups - it may be a way to find out something on the ladies..........I am sure my ggmum would have been involved in something during the day! What other ideas or confirmed groups does any one on this list have? I am keen to unearth something of Martha and Mary when I go south in March. Denise

    1. [AVNE] Ellen's reply to Denise.
    2. Eric and Judy Douthie
    3. I would like to reply to what Ellen needed to say on list. I find what she had to say offensive and totally inappropriate. I would like to say, that I am co-writing the so called book that Ellen mentions with Noeleen Smith (nee Lloyd)The concept of our book was; 1 To hopefully bring about some form of reconciliation between the extended Kelly family and others (being that Noeleen is a Lloyd and I am a descendant of Thomas Curnow's)Yes and we are great friends. 2 The exact details of our book are. We are writing about the people that were involved in the Kelly years AFTER 1880 and BEFORE 1945, No living person was to be mentioned. I am writing about the hostages, railway employees and police. Noeleen was covering sympathisers and others. 3 The stories we intended to tell were about the people, not about their skeletons. I.E. On of the hostages was a boy of 16 yrs of age, his only formal education was four years under Thomas Curnow at Glenrowan school, this young man went on to become a millionaire. DOES ANYONE FIND THIS STORY FARMFUL Our efforts so far have been applauded by the Police Historical Unit, Historians, People of note (Ian Jones, Keith Mc Menomy, Brendan Pearce, Matt Shore, Brad Webb) and thats just dropping a few names. What has upset me the most is that Ellen needed to say this on list. Aus-vic-NE is a wonderful, friendly, fun group of people and I am disappointed, that now seems to be spoilt. What a shame that an innocent request by our wonderful ringmaster had to be so vidictively answered. To Ellen herself; What you sow, so shall ye reap. Judith Douthie

    3. > Hi Denise I am sorry I cannot help re Appolo Theatre. Have you asked Richard Rankin? Would you like me to speak to Ian Jones? Between you and me Ian does SURMISE and use HEAR SAY which I find irritating. Don't get me wrong I have the greatest respect for Ian as a person, he is the dearest, sweetest thing , also I have great regard for his knowledge and his skills, but he does tend to see things from his perspective (as I see things from mine!!!) It always seems to be me saying "We must agree to differ" prickly old thing I am!! Keith McMenomy may be able to help try him at Keith Mcmemony <kandk@hinet.net.au> Be warned he is not quick to reply so may be make your query intriguing.!!!!!!!!!!!! I am not in his good books at the moment so I am not offering to make contact re this letter to Noeleen Smith nee Lloyd I think it is self explainatory!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! COPY Dear Noeleen, I have been contacted by several family members, as well as interested persons outside the family, with whom you have contacted regarding the book you intend to write about the descendants of the families involved in the Kelly story. Whilst it is commendable of Keith to encourage any one to write and publish, I want you to understand that in this case some very sensitive circumstances of both birth and death as well as brushes with the law will be published, that will most certainly be very hurtful and potentially detrimental for those concerned. Under normal circumstances family history publications do not attract much interest or attention. With the current interest in the Kelly family your publication will possibly attract attention and all our skeletons will be on show. I let you have my research in good faith as I thought as extended family you had a right to it, I believed you were interested in your family. I did not give it to you to use as source material to publish very personal details of our lives. Some very recent. Your actions have deeply distressed many family including myself, especially as it is my thirty years of research you have as source material. When you spoke to me on the 28th of December, I suggested you to write about your own line being the Hart line, but not to write about mine. Since then Richard Rankin has informed me of your enquiry's of him regarding my family. I ask you again please do not pursue my family history, enough damage has been done already by the likes of Jean Bedford and Daniel Keene. Enough hurt has been caused to those who spent their lives burying the past and concealing their family lineage. In my own case my father's family to this day do not know of my mother's or my Kelly connection. On behalf of those family who have contacted me regarding this matter, I am asking you to reconsider this book, and contimplate the repercussions of your actions. I ask you to use my research in the faith it was given to you , not to cause grief to the many it surly will, including my self. Yours Faithfully, Ellen Hollow

    3. Joan - I wonder if I can ask a huge favor. Denise has told me of the Beechworth cemetery where the little Gammon infants are buried. Is it possible to get a photograph of their burial site? Their sister married into my family, and I am keeping a Family Album for the future generations. I have a vague recall that there is a hedge of sorts around the site - I don't want to ask you to do anything difficult, if it is just the hedge, that's fine. Let me know of your expenses and I'll send you a money order. And if this is not convenient etc, please do not hesitate to decline. 3. Can someone please give me some advise on what to do next about finding some information out about my mothers grandfather. He was William Thomas Quin (I N), He apparently moved to the Lismore /Casino area after his 1st wife died in 1945 aged 59. I have found out her grave no in the Melbourne General Cemetary, she is buried with her son who died in 1966 aged 42. Irang Lismore and Casino cemetries and they do not have a record of him, I have also inquired about him at the same cemetary as his 1st wife and no record was found. No one in the family knows if he stayed in the Lismore/Casino area they think he remarried but aren't sure. Iknow it is not related to the NE area but thought someone may have an idea on where to go now, as I am fairly new to this and have hit a brick wall. Nola Gilcrist
