    1. [AVNE] RE: Ferguson Obituary
    2. Bonnie Joy
    3. Hi Kaye, I'm grateful to have a copy of this obituary. It was a disastrous time for Hugh's mother who had been widowed twelve months earlier. Three of her sons were killed at the war and the eldest son, who stayed home to run the farm, died of tetanus poisoning. The district farmers brought their teams of horses to the family property at Bobinawarrah for a 'patriotic ploughing day' on May 1, 1918. Many thanks Bonnie Joy (nee Ferguson). (Researching Ferguson, Kerr, Wolstenholme, McKimmie in Vic. Ferguson, Kerr, Sloan, Welsh in Ayrshire.) -----Original Message----- From: Kaye Patterson [mailto:kayep@deakin.edu.au] Sent: Wednesday, 6 February 2002 5:41 PM Hi Bonnie, here is the article you requested Wangaratta Chronicle, Saturday, 12/2/1916 "KILLED IN ACTION. PTE H V FERGUSON. Several weeks ago the relatives of Pte Hugh Valentine FERGUSON, of Bobinawarrah, received information that he was reported missing. On Wednesday last the Defence Department forwarded a telegram notifying that Pte FERGUSON was now officially reported as having been killed in action on 29th November at Lone Pine. A bursting shrapnel shell was the cause of his death. The telegram came through to the Rev F CHISHOLM, who conveyed the sad news to the family. Pte H V FERGUSON was the third son of Mrs and the late Mr Hugh FERGUSON, of "Gracevale," Bobinawarrah, and was 24? years of age. He enlisted early in 1915, and had been in the trenches on Gallipoli for several months before meeting his fate. He was a fine stamp of a soldier. He was engaged in farming at Holbrook NSW, when he enlisted, and he and his brother, Pte Geo FERGUSON, left for the front together, his brother having since been invalided to England sick, and is now in Scotland. Pte FERGUSON was a prominent playing member of the Milawa football club, and his amiable and sociable disposition made him extremely popular. Deep regret will be felt at his death - but he has won a hero's reward - and sincere sympathy will be extended to the mother and family in their loss. Deceased brothers and sisters are - Messrs Jack, and Andrew, of Bobinawarrah; Norman and Thomas, of Holbrook, Pt Geo FERGUSON, on service, Misses Margaret and Grace FERGUSON, Bobinawarrah." ____________________________________ Also, from my files FERGUSON Hugh Valentine: Pte 1021 24 Bn Enlisted 17/03/15 KIA 29/11/15 Age 24 [Bobinawarrah] Father Hugh FERGUSON ; Mother Janet KERR ["Graceville" ] Killed Lone Pine. 3. Hi Doug, We were in contact early last year. I don't remember what I sent to you. You certainly know more about George Welsh FERGUSON's family than I do. Let me know what I sent and what you're interested in. Did you know that George was named after his grandfather, George WELSH who lived in Old Cumnock, Ayrshire, Scotland. George emigrated, July 1857, on the monster clipper Donald McKay, together with his sister Margaret and her husband John Kerr. Regards, Bonnie Joy (nee Ferguson) Hi Bonnie Joy My Great Aunt Jinnie SMITH married George Welsh FERGUSON so I am very intested in sharing the family with you. 2. Jackie Callinan
    3. Denise, the following extract (from an article on the Pinsent Hotel) doesn't answer your question, but the article may give a couple of leads - perhaps the marriage and/or birth were in South Australia? "The Pinsent began as a private hospital - a vote of confidence in the future of the little settlement at the Ovens Crossing Place by the new doctor, John Gemmell. Gemmell had trained in Edinburgh and had emigrated to Australia before the goldrush. After registering as a doctor in South Australia, he moved to Wangaratta, to be one of its earliest medical practitioners. In May 1850, at the sale of township allotments held in Melbourne, Gemmell picked up most of the northern end of Reid Street for about sixty pounds, and on the crest of the hill, he erected his hospital, the first for many miles around. Wangaratta at this time was a community catering to the needs of local pastoralists, and the stock-owners and travellers moving up and down the route pioneered in 1836 by Maj.Mitchell. There were several hotels and stores, mostly built of canvas, slabs and bark, but by the time Dr. Gemmell arrived, brick buildings were being erected. Dr. Gemmell stayed only briefly in the private hospital business. Great events were happening. Victoria had chosen to go it alone as a separate colony, and gold discoveries were being made with breathtaking rapidity. It was time for John to try the alternative occupation so many colonial doctors found highly desirable - that of a pastoralist. In 1853, Gemmell purchased from David Reid the pastoral holding of Woorajay (sic), not far from Beechworth, as well as Reid's other station at Coreen across the border in NSW. A squatter he remained for more than a decade, increasingly besieged by an army of diggers pressing at his front gate, and like most of the squatters of the day, being liked less and less by the miners. He put his popularity to the test in 1857, by offering himself as a candidate for parliament, but lost by a handful of votes miners votes. He turned his attention to pastoral matters, but after being injured in an accident while returning from Coreen, he sold his northern station, and after a period of ill health, died at Wooragee in 1866." 1. [AVNE] National Cousins Day
    2. Carmel & Len Fitzgerald
    3. Two years ago, 5 Morgan cousins decided to instigate the inaugural National Cousins Day - the date to be the nearest Sunday to 25 October. Purpose? To establish links and share histories, chat, laugh, drink, enjoy! How often? Each year at a venue suitable to the majority of cousins in your family Spread the word. If enough groups of cousins pick up the idea and run with it, the day will become another calendar day just like Mothers Day, Fathers Day Grandparents Day (at schools, kinders etc). It is also different to family reunions or school reunions. How about it? Celebrate the fact that because of our interest in family history, we belong to that wonderful group known as cousins. The date this year is Friday 25 October. Why not make a weekend of it If there are any Morgan/Patterson cousins out there, I will be delighted to direct you to our venue for 2002 Regards Carmel

    3. For my staff member Mary Dean. I have unearthed some very important information on her rellie......... Very informatvie - 22nd October 1929 Mayor Cr Mather took a peg along when he opened the pig yards at Wangaratta. Based on the design of the pig yards at Colac cost over £4000. They had concrete floors, and a roof. Built in Tone Road at Bacheldr's Green next to where the Tourist Centre stood. Won't get too many tourists when the pigs are in residence I am sure. Busy month for Cr Mather. A cycle race which was to put Wangaratta on the map got under way in 1929 on 19th October. Organised by Bruce Small the field included the famous Hubert Opperman. Cr. Mather got up early that day and sent the first bunch off just before 6 am. The winner was O. Nicholson, with Opperman 5 minutes behind. Time taken by Nicholson was 10 hours 33 minutes and 15 secs. Mayor Mather must have enjoyed himself at the races, any races, - for he did attend the one on 1st Feb 1930. Cr Mather made the presentation to Maroney a local runner who won the Gift off twelve yards in 12 seconds. Mather got carried away a tad and called for 3 cheers for the local runner. This was during a Wangaratta Carnival. This was the first time that a local had won the gift. Mather retired for the night, got worn out chasing the guy to give him his medal. 3. I have read where Dr. John Gemmell - Wangaratta's who opened first hospital and who also bought David Reid's station at Wooragee had a son John Jnr. The son was educated at Scotch College, and I assume this one is in Australia I have been unable to establish Dr' John (the father) marriage or the birth of children. Is anyone able to look it up for me on the Pioneer Index. Dr. John died in 1865. Sorry I don't have much more information. Dr was born in Scotland. Thanks Denise
