John, Dr. came to the north east of the state in 1840ish, lived in Wangaratta and Wooragee died in 1865. He was born in Scotland, but where I have no unearthed yet. If you are interested in the Eldorado area, Mary Dean knows of a great book on the area and the families and she also knowsthat Jimmy had a pub. copied from last night's chatting "Kathy, the publican bit is around 1871, the piece Denise had is 1875: and "The company made appliacation on 12.11.1875 to be registered as the Ovens Gold and Tin Mining Company and a No Liability Company under the provisions of the Mining companies Act 1871. Place of operations - Eldorado. From my map of the mines in the area, this mine was #1 and #2 and is situated on the western side of the township separated by the gold dredge. Anyway your James Drummond of Eldorado a contractor bought 20 shares of the 4000 offerred. Is he connected to the Wooragee Drummonds. A bit about the mine - a ghost still lingers there...............and it closed in the late 70's due to too much water. it was the deepest mine apparently." I wrote to the Masonic archives recently about a few rellies and this part of the reply relates to Beechworth. Now, I'm confused. I have been inside ST. Johns Lodge #14, have seen Hiram's portrait hanging there, have seen the minutes of his inaugural meeting, so he belonged. Now what is the below? I realise there were more than one lodge in Beechworth but has anyone any knowledge of the one below? The Caledonian lodge.........where is that. by this year Hiram was leaving Everton and in Melbourne. Is this lodge there? Only stayed with it 2 years. What a wonderful service too from the archives.
