As part of my preparation for researching when in Beechworth etc etc I am trying to get together some ideas on what to look for in relation to finding out more on the women in the families. I am hoping that some of our listers, including those who are joining the circus could perhaps join in this thread. What would you look for when researching/where would you look 1. Women's guild at the churches 2. Hospital committees 3. LIbrary membership 4. Perhaps church choirs - church records 5. Temperance movements 6. 7 How about giving up some ideas for research - we may all be able to find something. Another idea I have is, if one of us is actually searching and gets copies of rates/records of any kind, then if any of the names are on these lists are relevant to others on the circus we could share at our dinner table etc etc. Any other ideas? Anne, Finally! Page 158: COREEN (Co Hume) Part of Collendina run. When first taken up by David Reid in 1841, drought compelled him to abandon it. It is said to have been taken soon after by Wilson but no certain record till 1850 when Huon and Drummond were in possession. They sold it to John Gammell (sic) of Wangaratta. ............... Gemmell sold to Ronald and McBain who held it in 1871 and sold to Hon. Henry Wilson, from whom it passed to Richmond. Sorry for the break in transmission, Anne. Coreen, in case you don't know, is north of Corowa, NSW. This book is worth a fortune, and from the looks of it, is commanding one to buy it. A facsimile copy at $100 is probably a bargain. Having seen both 1st edition and the facsimile, I feel the only (doubtful) benefit in getting the original is in the collector's value, and the one (fairly ordinary) photo of a painting of the original Bontherambo Homestead. It surely is time for a further facsimile edition? Said to have been formed by Dr William Bowman, before 1840, as a heifer run, the ownership for the next few years is doubtful. In 1848 David Reid held 40,960 acres estimated to carry 6,000 sheep. He transferred to A C Anderson. In 1854, Dr Gemmell of Wangaratta was in possession. In 1857, Mr J Lowrie was gazetted as lesse at a rent of 12 pounds 10/-. It was taken up by Mr George Faithfull in April 1835 for his sheep, when he placed his cattle in Oxley Plains. He was compelled to abandon it owing to troubles with the aborigines. ................... In August 1838 the Rev Joseph Docker of Windsor near Sydney, undismayed by fear of the blacks, reformed it and laid claim to the whole country as far as the Murray. In 1839 the area was curtailed by the formation of the Bremin, Boorahaman and Ulina runs, but still 100,000 acres were left. This was estimated to carry 1500 cattle or 20,000 sheep. In 1848 the area remained the same.............. The Gazette of 1879 gives Samuel Brentnall as lessee, but in the following year it was gazetted as liable to forfeiture. p 145: WAHGUNYAH (Co Bogong) On the left bank of the Murray, 30 miles below Albury. .........................in 1853 the Gazette notes a transfer from John Mackenzie to John Foord, the previous owner. ............ In 1856, Foord laid out the township, and in 1857 he is credited with holding 34,000 acres, carrying 880 cattle and 48 horses. In 1859, J C Read was the lessee, representing the firm of Read and Younger. In 1862, their rent was fixed at 241 pounds......but on appeal, reduced to 25 pounds. In 1868 H J Younger sold his share to Read, and returning to Scotland, became the head of the large brewery business of Younger and Co in Edinburgh. Much alienation of land followed, and in 1874 the remainder of the lease was forfeited for non-payment of rent. And on that cheery note, here endeth the extracts! There is no other mention of Reads.
