    3. Hi Denise, See "On this day in the North East", page 244: Nov 25th, " The crowd was in a particularly festive mood as celebrations were also going on all over the North East to welcome the arrival in Victoria of the Duke of Edinburgh". Party time! I'm sure I've read somewhere however that HRH was somewhat bored by his stay in Beechworth , and was a tad churlish and anxious to leave. I hope the residents were equally happy when he left. 3. Hi Listers I have a note passed down thru family. "John Jenkins and wife moved to Robe in SA and bought the Criterion Hotel and lived there for some time. They sold and later bought another hotel near by. At this hotel Isabella's mother was only 5 years old when she sang to Royalty and they gave her a gold locket. Mr and Mrs jenkins then moved to Benyeo (Vic) and took up land there". This locket is still in the family and been seen by cousin. From obituary printed in the Narcoorte Herald. "Mrs Mary Rubeena Blacksell widow of Mr Richrd Blacksell died at Naracoorte at the age of 76 years. She was the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs John Jenkinson Benyeo (Vic.) was born there on April5th 1857. In her younger days mrs Blacksell was a splendid horse rider and use dto follow the hounds as well as take part as one of the beaters when coursing after wallabies on the Mosquito Plains. A locket was presented to her by the late DUKE OF EDINBURGH when he visited Robe while on a sporting expedition may years ago. Forty five years age Mr and Mrs Blacksell went to Naracoorte to live where her husbandfollowed farming and laboring puirsuits till the time of this death on June 10th 1931". Do any of these names look familiar to you? Heather Brooks (nee Barrett)

    3. Lucky you David. Good luck to you both in your new home, and new lives. If you have nothing else to do when you settle in the north east, can you please start pushing the area northwards, up as far as Bellingen or Alstonville, will do nicely thank you. I shall then move to the area myself. 3. Hi Would like to apologise to all those wonderful people who helped me out with research into the Kneebones & Rae's late last year. I've been in The Netherlands for several months with my wife, I'll try and reply to all concerned soon. A week or so back I visited Bowman's Forest Cemetery and took a stack of photo's with the digital camera of Kneebone & Rae graves. I have not had a chance to go through them but I got every grave. Anybody wanting copies are welcome to them. And after spending a few days at Myrtleford, my wife and I were so taken by the place that we have decided to sell up in Melbourne & return to our roots. We will be moving there in June. Oh what a place.. I can see why my ancestors lived there. David Onley

    3. Jenny thanks for this. I wish I knew the significance of the name. Baarmutha the house is actually still standing and is in Beechworth near Baarmuth Park (the sports ground near the cemetery). Why it was called Baarmutha I have no idea given that the township/village was in the opposite direction. Baarmuth was also the name given to a fire engine Hiram bought in the US and gave/sold to the Fire Brigade. So there must be something about the name. In the meantime, does this book mention Black Springs which must have been close by. thanks Jenny Denise ----- Original

    3. Hi Denise and others, Having recently purchased Geoff Craig's book about the Three Mile district, I now know that the Post Office at the Three Mile (opened 1875) was called the Baarmutha Post Office. Does that mean your Hiram's house was out at the Three Mile, or does Baarmutha have another significance? According to the book the Three Mile district is bounded by the Beechworth/Myrtleford Road, the Murmungee/Everton Hills and the Wangaratta/Beechworth Road. 3. Hi Heather - I am printing out the twig in which my GEMMIL appears - have another mug of coffee and it will be done.........OK - these will not be in any logical order - gotta go to a Docor's app't in a few minutes. I have a Christina SPEARS/SPIERS who married John GEMMIL in 1878 #4734. I also have a Christina Isabel GEMMILL, and Spiers Frank - parents of Ivy SPIERS who died in Kyabram 1920 #15062 . Christina died in Kyabram, in 1965, aged 65. (This is the one that links to my family I think). I will look for more info for you - so far no items re GEMMILL birth place - they only appear where they married into the forebears of wives of the ORR people. 3. Hello Friends, Nandina has raised a very important issue ...... and one dear to my own heart. While visiting cemeteries, if you find your grandmother's and greatgrandmother's headstones with no mention of their maiden names why not resolve to correct the deficiency? And do make sure that your own mother's headstones acknowledge that they were a person by showing their name ...... not just someone's wife and mother. Kindest Regards ......
