Tommy Hoyle coach driver who worked for Crawford and Co. died on this day. He was workig at 4 am on 18th preparing the coach for the trip from Baddaginnie when the horses took firght and bolted. Tommy was dislodged from the box and crushed under the wheels of the coach. Four passengers were thrown on but none seriously injured. His funeral was well attended. Tom, a well respected member of the community left a wife and family. This accident caused renewed agitation for the fitting to coaches of a safety bolt which could be withdrawn in an emergency allowing the horses to become detached. If anyone is connected to Tommy, I have a newspaper article about him and his untimely death. Denise
the real version is in On This Day in the North EAst - G Jones on 27th February 1868 the north east had an earthquake. Only lasted 4 or 5 seconds but enough to scare the daylights out of grandma. Buildings shook and the cuppa rattled. The Waves appeared to moved in a north to south direction, Beechworth, Stanley, Chiltern and WAng all reported rockin'rollin. It had happened in 1858 when a quake rolled across from Campaspe to the Murray in 58. Mr. Maiden was rowing across the river near present day Moama, and according to tales at the time, the tidal wave nearly overturned his boat! Was it compulsory to have life jackets???? Denise

Wonderful Robynne, I hope the certificate gives me the place of death at least. He was supposed to have been born in 1817 in Sydney but death certificates are notorious aren't they. Ada hi I certainly hope you don't think I am in any way complaining about the Cd's.! If it wasn't for them, and my using them 2000km from the actual source, I would hve got as far as I have in what I am doing. I think they are a wonderful source, and it is amazing how you can find what you are after, other than the ordinary way of putting data in. Quite often it becomes a game. And take them for granted......no regards Denise ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ada Ackerly" <aackers@alphalink.com.au> To: <AUS-VIC-NE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, February 25, 2002 10:50 AM Subject: Re: [AVNE] BDM cds town spellings > Hello listers, > > When the Victorian Pioneer Cds first came out, I had an interest in > Williamstown, and, by knowing the names of locals, I found 78 ways of > entering Williamstown, including four which began with "S" and dozens of > entries for William spelt "Wiillliam", so it looked as though someone > incorrectly made a macro key for William, but entered the wrong spelling. > > It was entries such as these that caused the registry to allow the work on > corrections to be done. Hello listers, When the Victorian Pioneer Cds first came out, I had an interest in Williamstown, and, by knowing the names of locals, I found 78 ways of entering Williamstown, including four which began with "S" and dozens of entries for William spelt "Wiillliam", so it looked as though someone incorrectly made a macro key for William, but entered the wrong spelling. It was entries such as these that caused the registry to allow the work on corrections to be done. The replacement cdrom is almost typo free. However, one should say that the original people were under great pressure to complete the work to get it out to show state governments that it was possible, and opened the doors to the production in other states, from which we all benefit, and now take for granted. Carol hello. Depending on which church you are speaking of, I do believe that the Beechworth Presbyterian records are in Hamilton , Vict. Other than that, I don't know what records for Beechworth churches do exist . Good luck, and I would like to hear if you find out any more on this subject. regards Denise
I am new to this list but have been reading it with interest for a number of weeks. Just spend a day in Beechworth, visiting the museum, talking to Geoffrey Craig and doing both Stanley and Beechworth cemeteries. I am a direct descendant of James Lishman Wilberforce and Ellen Ashdown, who were one of the pioneering families (no 109 in Rosalyn Shennan's book), through Willard Ashdown Wilberforce who married Ada Prismall, and their daughter Ellen. I was advised that the baptism, marriage and death records of some of the Beechworth churches are intact and was wondering if SKS could point me in the right direction to get lookups or copies of certificates. I have copies of the BDM certificates for the above people, but would be interested in the other certificates available. I would be more than happy to hear from any other people researching this family or the connected families,ie. Corbetts, Colliers, Townsend, Lowing and Simpsons. Carol Dale
Hi Denise, that's how I found all the variations of Wooragee for you! Those buttons are incredible sometimes and to do a thorough search you HAVE to use them Have fun!!!! Today I was fiddling around with the BDMs and started using the buttons on the right of the look up section (where you put in names etc). Has anyone ever tried not inserting a name of any description but pressing the button on the right. e.g. Death place, click on button and up comes all manner of places. The beauty of this method is that you can see the variations in spelling used on the registrations for towns, eg. Beechworth comes up with a few variations. INsert this name, and you get results. The bottom button gives you parishes. UP comes things which I assume don't show up under normal registrations, e.g. Carl Women. pentridge comes up also under one of these buttons! I never knew this before, haven't delved far enough obviously - but it is amazing what is there which may have been missed because of the spelling. I'm off now to play with names and variations! I've just spent so much time in the past typing all variations I could think of and didn't even then get all the town "mispellings" etc. Youare a wonder, and I thought you had gone mad, and made them up!!!!
