    1. [AVNE] Mid wives
    2. Denise McMahon
    3. I am hoping the people on this list with rellies who lived in Wooragee would be able to help me with the names of midwives/.nurses on the birth certificates. If your rellie lived in Wooragee and is registered as born in Beechworth this is perhaps only because that was the registration office after the mid 1860's. So anyone in Wooragee may well have been born there, but registered in Beechworth. Thanks for any help Denise

    3. Mike I don't think I ever replied to this informative email. Please forgive me - I've been inundated lately with work and my own research is keeping me flat out - thanks to a wonderful lady on this list - you know who don't you Kathy! I see you must have a great interest in this cancellation thing. Do you collect stamps too? Is your collection in a box and still in the box after 50 years? Just awaiting the day HE retires! I recall stamped envelopes, and not licking type stamp either. I always thought that they weren't any good for collectors. How little you know. Love the artwork. Keep practising, and many thanks. Particularly for the Wooragee one. I shall install it in the Post Office section of the history! Acknowledge you as "donor". The first licenced hotels in 1854 were William Neuber's "Beechworth" and C.H.Palmers "Eldorado" and a third was "John Reilly's) In 1856 were Wallace's "Star", James Wilson's "Criterion", John Duncan Fisher's "Commercial", "Eldorado", M.Langford's "Beechworth" and others kept by Henry Wise and Joseph White.
