Thanks Rae for your question. I too was wondering about the Circus and the Bios, but was too proud to show my ignorance. Thanks, Denise for the explanation. How much are they? I enjoy reading this site - it feel likes you are a third party to a conversation though, but don't stop Carmel

I have a copy of this for a couple of days, if anyone wants a look up. As it has NO INDEX, I will some clues as to timeframe/ place / etc. Denise
There is a Cairn near Everton. It marks the spot where Hume and HOvell crossed the road to Bright!!! They descended from the hills and reached the stream they named the Ovens. They are thought to have passed the future site of Beechworth in the vicinity of Baarmutha and down they went into the valley between Everton and Murumngee, arriving at the OVens just downstream of the present day Whorouly. Hovell said "it as pretty a spot and as valuable as any I have seen since leaving home.... I have named it the Ovens in compliment to Major Ovens". Test............Who is M Ovens? The cairn is right outside the boundary of Brookfield - Hiram Crawford's property at Everton. So I was tickled to find this description and I am putting a comment in the story but would like to know from someone on the list with good history sense who Ovens was. Thanks Denise
Rae. The Bio's started in NOvember last when it was decided that Di's circus would travel the north east . NOw Di's circus is a gathering of researchers from this list and the other meeting to do a tour of the museums, cemeteries, wineries, towns, wineries, museums and wineries. Each person going was asked to contribute a Bio and that then expanded to include anyone on the lists. They were done over a period of time, submitted and collated and bound. Bios consisted of informaiton on the person contributing and details of their research names and interests around the north east. These were available for purchase by anyone and some will be given to the local FHS in the north east as a records of those who are researching and the names they are researching. I know it is too late to contribute to this edition, but perhaps if Chris sees this she may have some left for sale. Hello all Does anyone on the list have any information on Mrs Urquhart, who owned Cudgewa Station. I recently discovered she raised Caroline Buttcher (a rellie) from a young age (Caroline's mother died in Rutherglen in 1861 - she had two brothers, and I don't know if they stayed with their father or someone else). Caroline, or Ellen, as she came to be called, eventually married Billy Lowden, who was a well-known horse man in the area. I'm also interested in any information on the Lowdens and Tyrells. Regards Hans Braaksma Brisbane, QLD, Australia (Researching BEECHE, BEECHER (BUTTCHER), BONDESON, EVANS, HINE, LOWDEN, PAROISSIEN, SHANNON, TELFER, TYRELL)
Can some one tell me where the place called 'Nathalia' is? I assume it is in Victoria? One of my descendants had this as a second name and am wondering about it's origins. Many thanks Jo

Hello Denise, You are very kind to keep a look out for my FOSTER lot. Unfortunately this William Henry FOSTER is not my William Henry FOSTER. He is the "Boy Warden" after whom the town FOSTER is named (changed from Stockyard Creek.) He was a travelling judge/magistrate who certainly got around and created a lot of history. Whilst you are looking/and re posting my interest My William Henry FOSTER mined at Two Mile Creek and Three Mile Creek, obviously struck gold and set up a butcher's shop (his trade in Coventry) in Madman's Gully. He then became licensee of The Prince of Wales Hotel , Beechworth, which is now a car park, and then owned The Temple Bar Hotel, Beechworth which was located where the Salvation Army Hall is now. The Temple Bar was willed to his second wife Anne/a Maria FOSTER nee MAST nee JONES, who then married John Godfred COGDELL. First wife Caroline FOSTER nee PRITCHARD disappeared some time in between 1851 and 1869 either in England or Australia. Anne/a Maria and John Godfred COGDELL sold the hotel and he died in Brunswick in 1894 and she disappeared as well. Interestingly there is no record of the death of her first husband William MAST. There was obviously some family tension/problems as William Henry FOSTER left everything to his second wife and a shilling to his sons Henry FOSTER MLA (later the first member for Gippsland East) and Thomas FOSTER of Omeo. He also bequeathed a shilling to his daughter Ellen whom he named as Helen in the will, and another shilling to Caroline FOSTER who he stated had died in 1856 on his second marriage certificate. No evidence has been found of Ellen FOSTER in Australia. This problem of Caroline and Ellen has led me up many paths of investigation, purchase of certificates, looking at burials etc. both here and in England - if anyone has any ideas of where to look or a new slant on how to look at the problem I would love to hear from you.
