    3. Mike, Robert Ritchie De GRAVES, b. Wodonga 1911 (#35859) to John Robert & Margaret Florence RITCHIE. Stanilaus De GRAVES (b. Woolshed), m'd 1911 #3957 Elsie Isabella WAITE... ch'n were Kathleen Ellen (1912, Melva Martha (1915) & Daphne (1919). My interest was sparked as I know also of a De Graves family based in Yackandandah (where I live). John De GRAVES & wife Ellen HARRINGTON had at least 4 ch'n here: John Robert (1854, #7431), Martha Honora (1859, #21993), Jeremiah James (1865, #5986), and Michael Joseph (1862, #11843). Martha Honora married Albury saddler Thomas CHUBB in 1882, and descendants of this family still live in Albury. 3. Is this the beginning of the end........ 19 Oct 1888 - A lady and gentleman, who were about to take a drive on Monday morning, had their enjoyment slightly marred. Having engaged a buggy and pair from Messrs. Crawford & Co.'s stables at Wodonga, the pleasure party had only proceeded as far as the railway crossing, when the shrieks of the whistle and the running of the train so terrified one of the horses that, after sundry attempts to get out of the harness, the poor animal reared and, coming down heavily on its head was dead in a few minutes. The luckles horse was Messrs. Crawford & Co.'s well-known creamy. (Source - Wodonga and Towong Sentinel) Enjoy your day Chris

    2. Peter Lakeman
    3. The following message from a non-subscriber is being forwarded. Looks like some interesting info there. Cheers Peter ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ All, I just put up a page with pictures of the graves of the Gammon children in Beechworth Cemetery. You can get to the page from http://www.piko.com.au/general. The "Tour of Historic Graves at Beechworth Cemetery" brochure, written for the Beechworth Cemetery Trust by Ian Hyndman, says: "The Gammon children's grave is surrounded by a hedge just in front of the Rotunda. Inside is a statue of a sleeping baby, and the names of some of the children may be seen on the statue pedestal. George (a chemist) and Kate Gammon (nee Burgis) lived in Ford Street. They had ten children, and seven of them are buried in this grave. Their names are Adelaide, Frederick, Louise, Florence, Agnes, Constance and Alice. They died progressively between 1862 and 1872. Their ages at death ranged from 9 weeks to two years. They died from conditions such as atrophy (wasting disease) and diarrhoea. By 1872 the Gammons had had eight children, but only one, Lucy, was still alive. In 1874 and 1878, Walter and George were born. These tragic deaths illustrate the trauma of family life in the 19th century, when so many children died from illness and disease which is now able to be treated." 3. Yes Jackie, the literacy world has lost a notable writer, she was still writing until the end & has left behind an unfinished book about a special small pony. I'm sure mother in law will be there, as will all of Corryong I assume, - even livestock!! A quote from our local paper "The streets of Corryong will be silent on Friday when a cute palomino pony called Thowra will lead a funeral procession." (The pony is to remind people not only of her writings but of the courage & tenacity of a woman who overcame many challenges in life.) Damien - I'm assuming there will be various vales/obits/articles written about her, I believe there was one in todays Age newspaper. I will certainly post 'something' to the list. If you like I can gather the ones locally & snail mail you copies???? Chris
