    3. Hi Denise and Bron, I missed the original inquiry. A HUTCHISON is mentioned several times in the Albury papers - he worked with my gggrandfather Dr KEATINGE in Albury in the 1860s e.g. "Albury Banner" 7 April 1868 Albury Hospital Report for October ... Visting Medical Officers Drs HUTCHISON and KEATINGE. Dr HUTCHISON will examine applications for admission during the month of November. .. On Saturday last an amputation at the thigh was performed on John MORGAN, who was admitted on this 18th ultimo, suffering from a severe incised wound opening into the knee joint. The operation was performed by Dr HUTCHISON, assiested by Drs KEATINGE and BARNETT, and the patient is now progressing favourably. I'll see if I can dig out any more references. 1. Re: [AVNE] Sir Henry Brougham Loch (1827-1900)
    2. Mary Millar
    3. from Grolier Encyclopaedia under heading LOCH Henry Brougham LOCH, 1st Baron Loch of Drylaw (1827-1900), Governor of Victoria, son of James Loch, MP was born on 23rd May 1827. He entered the Royal Navy in 1840, left it as a midshipman in 1842, and was commissioned in the Bengal Cavalry in 1844. In 1852 he was made adjutant of the famous irregular corps, Skinner's Horse. When the Crimean War began he was sent to Bulgaria to assist in organizing irregular Turkish cavalry, and served throughout the war. From 1857 to 1860 he was attached to Lord Elgin's missions to China and Japan, in 1858 taking to England the Treaty of yeddo, and in 1860 the Treaty of Tientsin, after being treacherously captured by the Chinese and exhibited in a cage, together with the correspondent of The Times. In 1861, having left the army, Loch was appointed secretary to Sir George GREY, the Home Secretary. In 1863 he was made Lieutenant-Governor of the Isle of Man, and in 1882 Commissioner of Woods and Forests. In 1884 he was appointed Gov. of Victoria, and reached Melbourne in July of that year. His term of office coincided with the prosperous years of the regime of Duncan Gillies (q.v.), and his lavish hospitality and encouragement of philanthropic and educational movements soon made him widely popular. He took leave of absence in March 1889 to visit England, and during his stay there was persuaded by the British Gov. to undertake the administation of South African affairs as High Commissioner for South Africa and Governor of the Cape Colony. He therefore returned to Melbourne for a month only (October-November 1889), and proceeded thence to Cape Town, where he remained until 1895. Retiring in that year, with a barony, he lived privately in England until his death, on 20th June 1900. He was created C.B., 1861; K.C.B., 1880; G.C.MG., 1887; G.C.B., 1892; P.C. and baron, 1895. He married in 1862 Elizabeth VILLIERS, niece of the 4th Earl of Clarendon, who bore him a son and two daughters. from Grolier Encyclopaedia under heading HIGINBOTHAM When Sir Henry LOCH, during his term as Governor, wished to leave the colony for a time, the ex Governor of South Australia was put in as his locum tenes; when the situation recurred at the end of 1892, it was decided to install the senior puisne judge, Hartley WILLIAMS, over HIGINBOTHAM'S head. Governor of Victoria 15.7.1884-15.11.1889 Sir Henry Brougham Loch, G.C.M.G., K.C.B., afterwards Baron Loch of Drylaw, Governor and Commander in Chief. ¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ Regards, Mary of Melbourne FOSTER, Coventry - PRITCHARD,Coventry - GEOFFREY, Middlesex - ORCHARD, Warminster, Wiltshire STUART,Glasgow, - EDWARDS,England, GREATZ,NSW - PFITZNER, Prussia WILLIAMS,CUNNINGHAM, HUMPHREYS,MULVIHILL - All to Victoria Australia

    3. I am intrigued by the name - the ORRs. I have been looking to construct my ORR branch, in the hope of finding surviving rellies - Background: William ORR married Mary Ann RUSSELL in Ireland (Cork). They had a few kids before coming to Australia in 1865. They had more children here, and MaryAnn died officially from pneumonia. Male ORR children were John William Russell m Jane (SPEARS) in 1885; ....children Edith Jeanne; (Edyth Jean) m SALTER; John Robert Russell ORR - b 1893 in Avoca, m Janet Mabel NEWSOME in 1917; children - Jean Gherardin b 1918 in Geelong; Valerie Eunice, 1920 Geelong. Janet Mabel died aged 27 in 1927. John Robert Russell d aged 57, in 1957 - Flemington. There were several daughters, and I believe there may have been 1 birth with father 'unknown' - have not got easy access to that from here. Now, the big question - if you can follow the info above - is there anything that may link to your family? I must advise that there was a second couple with identical names. The one major difference was that this second Mary Ann was Australian born. 3. Dear Pat, I have this a reference to LOCH in my encyclopaedias which is quite informative and will send in a separate email. My ggrandfather Henry FOSTER who was a Victorian Parliamentarian had an article written about him in a Melbourne Gossip Magazine called Table Talk. I found this reference on Jacqui Cunningham's site "It's Old News" which has a searchable index of Victorian Newspapers, and can copy at a reasonable cost. I imagine there would also be a reference to him in the Victorian Parliamentary Biography and you could contact the Victorian Parliament for further information. I was also able to obtain a picture of my ancestor from them. If you use google and type in Victorian Parliament Australia it will take you to the site. There is also some on this list (from memory) who has a book called Cyclopaedia of Victoria from which I also received a reference to my ggrandfather. Hope this helps, ¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ Regards, Mary of Melbourne FOSTER, Coventry - PRITCHARD,Coventry - GEOFFREY, Middlesex - ORCHARD, Warminster, Wiltshire STUART,Glasgow, - EDWARDS,England, GREATZ,NSW - PFITZNER, Prussia WILLIAMS,CUNNINGHAM, HUMPHREYS,MULVIHILL - All to Victoria Australia

    3. Briefly, Morgan's Diary is the diary of Henry Morgan, an American from Yellow Creek, Indiana, who describes his journey from 1852 to Aust 1853 (on the Barque "President") and his life here, mostly in the Buckland Valley (1856 - 1909) as a miner & farmer. His unique style (although his understandable pre-occupation with the weather can be tiring!) makes for wonderful reading. The original is in the National Library, Canberra. There is a copy at the State Lib of Vic (MS12525, Box 3404/1, La Trobe Collection). Copyright for the electronic version is claimed by Mr F. R. Vines. I am happy to do look-ups of course. Henry does not give the name(s) of the PAGE man or men he mentions... 22 July 1860: ....."Brown, Miller, Page, Williams and others were here to day having in view the purchase of plant." 6 Dec 1861: "Page, Lees, Tanswell, Bryant and Fowler started for the Lachlan". These are the only references to Page. The Tanswell of course was Thomas, who was a bucher & hotel-keeper in the Buckland (1857) before having a hotel at Morses Creek (Bright), and then at Beechworth. 3. I use the alt key with 156 on the numeric key pad. But I cannot remember if I assigned it with that number, having first located it on the symbol menu. In either case, using alt + keypad is far more convenient than going into another menu to select it. Oh - Windows 98 - Word 97, if that matters. 3. I am sure the listowner will put up with us in this thread. The symbols are important to us recording our research. ¼ = alt 0188 ½ = alt 0189 - and I love this one sick of writing .5 ¾ = alt 0190 £ - is another for pound = alt 0163 £ - alt 156 I suppose it is a case of playing around with the alt and numbers - you get some funny symbols. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mike Skurrie" <mskurrie@bigpond.net.au> To: <AUS-VIC-NE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, March 09, 2002 11:25 PM Subject: Re: [AVNE] Gold and the price thereof. > Hi Denise, > > That's (if you'll pardon the expression) bloody brilliant! 3. Not much to go on Pat but something to add to your story. Mick Dougherty, one of the best coach drivers known, was charged with the responsibility of taking Lord Loch 3 times, Lord Hopetown (Marquis of Linlithgow), Lord Brassey, Sir George Clarke, and the Rt Hon Lord Henry Tafford Northcote and Lady N, on tours of the north east. Mick worked for Crawford and Connolly (another plug here, (g)) from about 1875 until he met with an accident and broke his leg. He then worked on Mt Buffalo looking after the animals there. He drove the HIgh Plains routes in summer until the snow stopped the coaches and then he went back until summer driving the chiltern Beechworth run. Not much for you, but thought it interesting that you ask this question the same week I found out more about Mick. Denise Boss, Crawford and Connolly.

    3. Bron, I want to find out more about him to fill in some gaps in the history regarding those who "surrounded" Hiram Crawford for his life story I'm revising. For the life of me I can't figure out where I got this information. I have it here somewhere and I think it was newspaper articles, so therefore perhaps in the scrapbooks. I am certain it isn't in the Diary. So in brief what I have (ahh it is coming back I think it was in the farewell to Hiram in Chilter - will check it out) Hiram had a claim in Buckland working next to a well educated and cheerful young man . they were making more or less good returns when the epidemic hit. Hiram at this time was also running a store for Snow and Bigelow. (more names to dig up here) This young mate turned out to be a Dr. and he had thrown himself into working with the ill. Hiram eventually lost touch with Dr. Hutchinson until about 15 years later when Dr stepped off a coach and straight into Hiram's Star HOtel in Chiltern. He had been in Qld where his ventures were unsuccessful (now I recall quotes - sleeping in the open, etc etc) He took a room at the hotel and within two hours had his first patient. He eventually had practices in Wang and St. Kilda. That's it in brief. I have to go out now, but I shall dig into my coffin of records (actually a long box, I thought it an apt title for the box!!) and let you know. 3. Denise, Would this be Dr. Benjamin Clay Hutchinson???? I have a research query here for that name. It states that he was born 1836 in Edingburgh and practised in Wangaratta around 1880. Any further info on this man would be welcomed. Bron. Denise McMahon wrote: > Looking for anything on Dr. Hutchinson who cared for the dying in Buckland's fever epidemic in 1854.
