    1. [AVNE] Ashdown and Mills
    2. Carol Dale
    3. Dear all, As part of my research into the Ashdown's and the Wilberforces, I have come across a marriage in the Vic BDM index online of a Louisa ASHDOWN to a John MILLS in 1856. Louisa was the sister of Ellen Wilberforce (nee Ashdown) with her husband James Lishman Wilberforce settled in the area. Can anybody help on this one? I have no other information on Louisa, past her parental details and date of birth and this marriage reference. Carol Dale Researching Wilberforces and related families in Beechworth

    1. [AVNE] Jewellery of the 1850's
    2. Denise McMahon
    3. Please excuse the cross posting but I am on a mission (arent we all ! ) (g) I have seen, touched, and fallen in love with a piece of jewellery which my greatgrandfather had made from gold he found in Woolshed Beechworth in 1856. It is a pin/brooch and is just so beautiful. It depicts him working his claim. It is in the shape of Australia, gg is Cape York, he is winching up a bucket of gold, there is a tent, mullock heaps, buckets spades and all manner of equipments needed to mine. He had a message inscribed across the bottom. It is reasonably large. I am hoping someone may know of a "historic jeweller" if there is such a thing - someone who has done much research into old jewellery. My other thought was to send digital photo of it to Vic Museum and ask their opinion. Sadly there appears to be no hallmark. It is presently in the hands of a cousin in the United States and I have promised to find out more if I can . Any suggestions welcome. Thanks, and Happy Easter everyone Denise

    3. Hi Denise, On page 79 Ned says that the coach was coming from Whitfield. Harry Power, the bushranger, is about to hold up this coach whilst young Ned holds Harry's horses away from the roadway. This excerpt is from page 80: "The air was filled with dust and panic. Throw down your gold I'm Harry Power. I calmed the packhorse and the Waler but my own blood were stirred something awful. Throw down the ....... gold cried Harry and I knew we would be rich and I were v. happy. There aint no adjectival gold said a dirt dry voice I peered out through the wattle fronds and seen Hiram Crawford's gleaming Yankee coach still rocking on it's queasy springs a tall thin stick of a driver were staring down through the settling dust. Harry pointed his one inch muzzle loader directly at the driver's shirt. I will blow your ....... innards out. But the driver were a Beechworth man named Coady...." There is roughly another two pages of this incident. Although the story is fiction maybe Peter Carey found records somewhere of this event. Hope you will be able to find out more. 3. Could this be a circus ??? A HOLIDAY TOUR - A pleasant trip has just been undertaken in company by Messrs Grieve and Allen, head teachers of the State schools of Allan Flat and Osbournes Flat. The intention of the tourists is to coach where permissible and to take pedestrian exercise where coaching is out of the question. The proposed line of route is to Omeo via Bright and Harrietville, thence to Eskdale and the Mitta Mitta and so homewards. The idea of Messrs Allen and Grieve is not to hurriedly pass through, but to linger according to fancy at each place to enjoy the scenery, and the change from "the daily round, the ceaseless toil" of school work to which they must only too speedily return. We wish them a pleasant trip, and increased health and spirits in consequence. ALSO a marriage notice - Alf White/Miss Sweetman, - if they are yours?? Chris

    3. I thought I'd relay to those of you who attended the circus a result I had today When the rest of you were touring Tarrawingi Cem and peering at the Bronze Lady in Eldorado , I was visiting Brookfield pottery at Everton. It happens that a couple of years ago I visited this place in the hope the chap may know where my gg's land "Brookfield" was exactly. Sadly I learnt that no house remains but he did give me a photo of activity on the place and I learnt the land was directly opposite his home. So when I was down there I took with me 3 newly unearthed (again that darn cousin) photos of Brookfield, the orchard and home and outbuildings, the kilns and the staff quarters. My contact was over the moon and extracted from me a promise to send him copies for he is the local historian (lucky me) and is compiling history of the area for display in the local hall. Today I received in the mail another photo of men "thrasing brown corn" on Brookfield from this Everton man. I am now on the bot for the photo of HIram sitting with men outside the local church!!! Can someone please tell me what on earth is brown corn??? These 5 workmen have a conveyor belt in front of them and above them apparently generated by a tractor. I am keen to find out more about brown corn, but being a city slicker I know naught about produce - and this is from a market gardeners daughter, shame. See folks, it pays to stick your nose into all sorts of places. This guy also wants to buy my book when I reprint it. My lucky day. Denise
