    1. [AVNE] A happy ending in Black Dog Creek (Chiltern)
    2. Denise McMahon
    3. Publicans were known to start a few rumours. It was rather a dangerous method of advertising, for the publican. A publican would spread word that gold had been found near his pub. Morgan was a publican in Black Dog Creek and one day he found himself standing on the edge of a mine shaft with a rope around his neck. The miners had accused him of spreading a falsie. Being good miners they decided to check first, and LOW, BEHOLD, they found gold in what was going to become MOrgan's grave. Morgan was very happy. As an aside - the man employed by Morgan to prosepct for gold was named John Conness - and Chiltern's famous street is called Conness after him. Denise - Qld

    1. [AVNE] B Museum-Robert O'Hara Burke
    2. Denise McMahon
    3. Everyone knows that the Burke Museum was once the Beechworth Library which in 1863 added the O"Hara Burke Memorial Musuem. It was extended in 1874, remodelled n 1961. When Burke was dying after his epic walk, he asked that his revolver be placed by his side - it read - "Presented to Captain Burke by the Residents of Beechworth, Victoria". Robert O"Hara Burke was Captain of Police in Beechworth and was known in the area for his lack of bushsense. He then decided to walk across Australia! Denise

    1. [AVNE] Tarrawingee
    2. Denise McMahon
    3. The district around Tarrawingee came into being with surprising suddenness when the cry "unlock the land" was heeded by the government. Par tof Dr. Edward Mackay's run was opened up. by 1857 the area was taking on the appearnce of the English countryside. Tarrawingee became the stopping pace ofr coaches on the long haul from Melbourne to Ovens and a meeting place for district settlers. One of the earliest businessmen was Hopton Nolan widely known for his 50 years association with the towns longest serving hotel the Plough Inn. He had been a public most of his adult life and was a close associate of John A Wallace (Star HOtel man) at Stanley when it was known as 9mile. He moved to Chiltern, looked after John's ineests there and then moved to Tarrawingee. He died in 1910. The Plough Inn was a single story structure and the second story was added in 1867. The other prominent building in the town is Ladson's Store which took it sname from Ladson Bros. when began as store keepers in early Beechworth. The Nolan family used this store years later as a private home but eventually it fell into disrepair. It was added to the National Trust in 1984 and was then renovated and restored to its original condition.

    3. Water in 1874, was turned on in Beechworth. Victoria Soclitor General , G.B. Kerford, opened the valve and released water from Lake Kerferd in the hills above the town. Frederick Brown (a Beechworth longtime stalwart) held a hose and directed the Kerferd water in an awe inspiring stream as high as the post office tower. -- 2/4/1874 - another happening in Beechwoth. The Newtown Bridge - the beautiful stone bridge on the Wangaratta side of Beechworth shops (down the hill and near the petrol station). the foundation stone was laid on this day and the bridge was completed the following year. Solid as a rock and it crosses Spring Creek and the mining race cut into the rock -- Euroa processing works 1894. was opened at Longwood producing canned rabbit for the UK market. Trappers were paid between 3p and 4p per pair, the rabbits then cleaned, packed in cans. Eventuallly with the onset of refrigeration a wing to shipment o rabbits in carcass form led to the factory being moved to Euroa where it diversified into chooks and veges. By the turn of the 20th century the factory had closed.

The hall had been undergoing renovations for several months under the guidance of the renowned London and Melbourne catering maestro James Ellis. Ellis advertised a Grand Ball and Prmenade Cenert every evening at 1/- admission and patrons could listen to the best musicians who could be lured to the goldfields. 1860 ALL FOOLS DAY In Chiltern Doctors and Lawyers were awakened by midnight calls to attend imaginary emergencies. They would go to some poor soul sleeping soundly, thinking they were attending to the ill and taking death bed wishes, only to hear from the "ill one" NO NO NO 1899 Jean McNamara was born on this day in 1899. She became one of Australia's most desitinguished medical pioneers. Born in Beechworth her remains on her death wer cremated and returned to Beechworth (1968) where as per her wish, she is laid to rest under a rock she remembered so well from her early days in town. This rock now stands in the C/E section not far from the front gate, is a large rock and on the rock is a plaque. I saw it last week. Quite different to the surround graves and quite impressive. Jean McNamara pioneered teatment for the effects of polio and was instrumetnal in bringing about he control of Australia's rabbit population by her efforts to introduce mysomatosis. Denise

    2. Denise McMahon
    3. Carol, whether Expert is the description I doubt But last week when I was at Burke M doing exactly what you want this is what was found -- Each book came in a year or two of rates for example 1881-2 and 1882-3 Name Street, sometimes the allotment and Section #, owner/landlord (i.e. if first Named is owner, it said owner, if it was rented it gave landlords name. What the property was used for. e.g. house land 5 acres, crops etc. etc. Sometimes you got the rates £ value But each year varied. To find the property you would have to see the parish maps etc etc from the Shire Council which is just behind the Burke Museum - you can walk to it - 1 minute. Hope this helps Denise - Original Message ----- From: "Carol Dale" <coradsl@tpg.com.au> To: <AUS-VIC-NE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, April 01, 2002 8:19 PM Subject: [AVNE] Information in rate records > I am considering requesting research on the rates records held in the Burke > Museum for the properties listed for my ggggrandfather, James Lishman > Wilberforce, but before I do, can anybody tell me what the rates records > contain ie. the type of information that I will get if I get the research > done. I was hoping to get addresses of the properties, so that I can take photos of them (if they are still there, which is more than likely doubtful). I have quite a number of references over many years span, so unless the information will be useful, I will need to consider if it will be money well spent. Expert advice on this would be appreciated. 3. Dear Denise, Thanks for the info on the McLuckies. At a quick glance , I don't think these three are in my direct line. James and Robert were brothers. Re James Moncrieff. He was born 1831 at Walls, Shetland Isles.Sct. He died 1898 at Scrubby Creek in the Mitta Mitta area. His father was John and his mother was Margt. Sinclair. There are two marriages listed to a Jas. Moncrieff ,likely to be the one we are looking for I think it could be the same person marrying twice Jas married Eliza Lawley 1865 Vic. Jas married Ellen Kennedy 1876 Vic. At a quick glance didn't find any children to Jas., but his brother Alexander had quite a few in the Mitta area.
