    3. Denise, I have extracts from a book called "The Lights of Cobb & Co" by Ken Austin. The book that you want would more than likely be held in Toowoomba as it is a Cobb & Co.Museum. The director there was Deborah Tranter but she may be gone now. Phone No. 076 391971 Fax 076 385791. 1. [AVNE] A happy ending
    2. Deborah Delahunty
    3. As a follow on to Denise's story; John Henry Conness was supposedly born aboard the ship ASIA that was on voyage from British America via Cork to Australia in 1835. He married Janet (Jessie) Gibson in 1867. John Conness was supposedly the discoverer of gold at the Indigo gold fields. John Conness often mined with his brother-in-law Hugh Gibson. In the 1880's John and Hugh opened the Grasshopper mine and employed fifty men. John Conness died in 1886 from pneumonia and was buried in the Albury cemetery. The upper Murray herald of 1/7/1886 stated 'General regret is expressed as Mr Conness was on of the oldest prospector's and miners of Victoria. He was known in every mining centre in the colony and NSW and always bore an unimpeachable character. His purse was always open to assist in any good work of charity.' Debbie

    3. Hi Carol, I'm looking at a map of the properties in the Bruarong area which is near me, but can find no mention of Wilberforce. Do you know WHEN he was there? I will check for you at Indigo Shire Yackandandah later in the day if you can give me an idea of the period. I'm at Osbornes Flat, near Yackandandah. Bruarong is roughly 10 kms from Yackandandah. 1. [AVNE] Myrtleford Character
    2. Denise McMahon
    3. Spud was his name. A colourful character was Spud. Real name Nuputata (new potato). He bore his nickname with good humour. Most hawkers of the north east had an unusual ending - public cremation. The last cermonial cremation in the n/e took place in the Wangaratta Common in early 1950's. The Government stepped in and stopped that - all further cremations had to take place at a recognised crematorium.
