    3. Dear Carmel That is exactly what I needed to know - many thanks. On an "inherited" family tree, I had a Mary McMannus being born at Murnungee station - and we all jumped to the conclusion that we were talking about railways : ) Not much point in a station with no track! Mary married Henry Lowerson, and became the mother of Albert, the famous local VC winner. Thanks again Susan ----- Original Message ----- From: Carmel Hickson <carmick1@optusnet.com.au> To: <AUS-VIC-NE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, April 15, 2002 5:13 AM Subject: Re: [AVNE] Murmungee & McMaster > Susan > During the 1860s and part of the 1870s, my g.grandfather Johnson > Quin held the lease on Murmungee Run until the Land Acts came into force. 3. Corinne, I'm not sure that I can make sense of this, but this is all I've found... Elizabeth Pee (could be Patience, or Penelope?) CHAPPELL (dau of John MADDERN & Honor HARVEY) died at Pine Grove 1914, "age 24", Reg #11261. Therefor born ca 1890. I would have to query her stated age at death, as her marriage #4047 (if of course she's the same person) was as Elizabeth OSBORNE (born Cornwall) to Richard James CHAPPEL ( born at Cambrian Hill, Vic) was in 1893. They had a daughter Ivy Elizabeth CHAPPELL at Dandenong in 1906 (#26108). I know. I don't understand it either. Hope I haven't got you on a wrong track. 2. Corinne Thompson
    3. Hello Denise, Thank you for helping me with this ...... I have been looking for this lady (my gg aunt) for nearly three years. Her father was William Maddern ...... her mother Phillis Maddern. PEE MADDERN baptised 25/11/1832 in St. Buryan, Cornwall Married THOMAS OSBORNE in 1853 in Geelong, Victoria Thomas died on 20/8/1907 in Melbourne, Victoria, and is buried in The Melbourne General Cemetery. His wife has not been buried with him, I think that (from memory) his brother is in the same grave. Which would support the info that I have just been given re her re-marrying, in spite of her age. Their children were: (i) Gertrude Geneva Osborne born 1855 in Newtown, Geelong, Victoria (ii) Thomas Arthur Davenport Osborne born 1858 in Ashby, Victoria I would also be grateful if you can find anything re either of her children. Kindest regards ...... 3. Hi Denise, Gooramadda (10 km NE of Rutherglen) had a Post Office from 1/10/1879 until 15/12/1965. Nothing that I know of recorded for Carlyle or Haines. There are four recorded postal markings recorded for Gooramadda. The first is a barred numeral, (there are similarities to the 778 canceller for Wooragee, but also huge, and most interesting, differences); its number was 1144. For numbers between 1000 and 1600, the numbers had Roman Numerals for the thousand and hundred part of the cancallation, then Roman Numerals indicated the tens and one's. Gooramadda's looked something like: ------ -- MC -- ------------ -- 44 -- ------ If you come across one for sale, I'm a most interested buyer. The other three markings are more conventional in the sense of what we're used to in (hand applied) postmarks: All had GOORAMADDA in a semicircle as the top of the cancellation; dateline in a straight line across the middle First type had VICTORIA in a semicircle as the bottom of the cancellation; it had no outer frame line and was used as a backstamp for letters postmarked with the MC44 Barred numeral. Second recorded type had an outer frame line and VIC in a semicircle as the bottom of the cancellation. Third recorded type had an outer frame line and VIC. (note the full stop) in a semicircle as the bottom of the cancellation. Neither of these latter cancellations is easy to find. The Border Mail has a half-page write up on it, and if you go to www.elders.com.au/albury you should be able to view it. "The original Gooramadda school house is also located on the property...." 3. One hundred odd years ago, a local inventor solved a fueld crisis in Wang by making a machine that generated power for the Albion hotel - on fat! This wonder of a machine ran on fat and was the invention of Mr. Wilson the Wangaratta Plumber. He built a gasgenerator, installed it in the hotel in 1886. Albion's chandelier was lit by this gas. One pound of rich fat = 100 fee of gas. It worked and the patrons were amazed. Taken from People Places and Things of the n/east - G Jones.

    3. I don't believe it but I think I've found an ad for the hotel where my ggmum was employed. Only a couple of months ago I found what I think is her arrival in Australia and then to beechworth. She was employed by the Beechworth Arms. When down at the circus I had my head in the OVens and Murray Advertiser and copied a page with something I wanted on it. Or rather half a page. I have just noticed half an ad which refers to "Arms Hotel.....Creek. and mentions Mrs. The woman who employed gmum according to her assisted shipping info, was a Mrs. Wigman, or perhaps a Mrs. Wyman - it was hard to read. Now this ad, refers to a Mrs and Arms Hotel and Creek (Beechworth). Is anyone going to do any researching of the O and M and could look up this paper for me. I don't have the exact date but it was in September 1857 as one of the ads is dated 17th September 1857 referring to a date coming up soon. I know this is a long shot but on the page is another ad which is for THE ROYAL HORSE BAZAAR in Ford St. and The Wooragay Horse Paddock. (large print for the headers). The ad is 3 colums left of the above ads. I know it is a long shot, but please if anyone can spare the time, I'd be so appreciative. I'm curious because I can see words like :Free and Easy Twice a Week" ments thrughout the house immediate superintendence of Mrs. second to none in the sitrict first importers in Melbourne Table, free The mind is boggling. This may give me a bit more of a lead on ggmum. regards Denise
