Hi Denise I would like any info you have on the above please Heather
Hi Denise - was it you who put pages from a journal etc onto a list (?which one?) and interjected with What on Earth is a Speak Easy? I have a print out from a newspaper 'back then' promoting Friday Night Speak Easy as a part of its regular program - wonder if it is like a Happy Hour, or Casual night? Spent all Sunday afternoon looking through, over, in and under every sheet of paper in my house looking for a medical referral and the deposit receipt for my CD burner, so can't lay my hands on the printout at this moment. Give me time to lose a few more things and I'll turn it up again. Boy, I hate being frustrated! Cheers, Nandina ----- Original Message ----- From: Denise McMahon <helendmc@powerup.com.au> To: <AUS-VIC-NE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 21, 2002 5:56 PM Subject: [AVNE] Perhaps your guy is here > 16/2/1905 > > TAllangatta area > > Jos Abbott > Alf Abbott > Thos Crawford > J. Hello all I recently joined the list as my COLSTON ancestors came from Barnawartha. I have a friend here in Melbourne who is from Chiltern, and she is a Gray and doesn't know much about her father's side. I telephoned her to ask if she knew if there was a George in the family. She wasn't sure, so I asked for the info and have forwarded it to her. I am happy to look up info in Melbourne for people in the country. Mr Patrick Mahony of refreshment rooms Wodonga whode died last week was formerly railway guard Remians were interred at Beechworth Mr. Hempel blacksmith of Tallantaggatta is still in Melbourne hospital. Latest report indicates old gentleman's condition to be extremely precarious. Shire Secreatry Maddock is back in harness again. He looks much better for his month's holiday qt the seaside. He recruited at Cowes, Phillip Iland Does recruited mean recovered? Truth now refers to Bent as "the Boar of Brighton" Such an unkind holding up of the mirror to nature is calculated to make Tommy grunt. Rev J.C. Johnstone has been in charge of Echuca Presbyterian Church for 34 years. Matthew Ryan - well known farmer of Middle Indigo, thrown from his horse and killed. Deceased was unmarried. Disease resembling cholera very prevalent in Cassills district. Several children have died therefrom. John Dunphy one of the pioneers of Buckland diggings died last week at Wandiligong aged 78 years Denise
Just a snippet I found in another page I'd copied from the O and M in Beechworth "The Bushranger Power This notorious scoundrel has now got a mate named Lake, who has been in goal for illegally using a horse, and they are sticking up in all directions. Dr Rowe the squatter near Mansfield got shot at Power on Thursday but fears he did not hit him. The bushrangers apparently did not show fight, but scampered off. The police have been indefatigable in their exertions to effect a capture; two troopers while hot on the trail unfortunately killed one of their horses and very nearly killed the other. In this part of the district we have reason to believe the Mr. Superintendent Wilson has organised a system that will make it pretty hot for Mr. Power should he appear here. There are said to be not less than 20 mounted civilians assisting the police in the Mansfield and Benalla districts. Ovens and Murray 29/5/1869
