Hi Ken Family story has it that John Jenkins came out to SA with the MC.SWEENs. In fact the story was that he was married to a Euphemia Mc.Sween. Maybe so but we found him married to Euphemia Mc.NEILL daughter of John Mc.Neill and Mary Mc.Leod. The Mc.Sweens were supposed to marry MASON brothers also. They lived with the Jenkins family for a time. Do you have any more info regarding these people? Regards Heather
Hello Listers To Ken would you get in touch with me as I think I have a little info on the MC.SWEEN sisters Heather <hbrooks@iprimus.com.au>

Hello Judy, No, only the surname was given, as he was not called on to give evidence, but was mentioned in Blake's affidavit. I presume he also acted as guard on the first half of the journey and driver for the more dangerous part requiring experience. Best I can offer. Hi Anne, Thank you from the newspaper story. There are a couple of observations that I would like to bring up from this story. (1) Mr Wilson the owner of "Home Station" Milawa would be Thomas Wilson who married Elizabeth Smith, John Smith's sister. (2) Mr Graham could be John Graham a Scot who came to Australia by way of Canada and a small (117 acers) landowner on the Oxley Plains I understand that Mr Graham and Mr Wilson were in partnership ? (3) Mr D Gardner (Milawa) could have been Wilfred McDonald (Duke) Gardner son of Colin Gardner and Mary Smith. Mary was also John Smith's sister. (4) John Smith's wife and daughter who gave the alarm on the fire would have been Florence Matilda Oliver and Reta Dorothy Smith Kind regards Doug

Hi to everyone on the list, I was wondering if anyone can help me with any information on Chappell family from Chiltern. Apparently at one time Jane Chappell was the licensee of the Black Dog Creek Hotel. Or anything on the Higgins family which I believe married into the Chappell family. This is a request from a man in Cootamundra who asked if I could find out anything on his family. I thought the list was the best place to start. Regards Judy

A run of slum and drift took place in the mine. Ferguson, knowing that most of the men at work were probably ignorant of their danger, went back through the rising slum and gave the alarm to his mates, who thus escaped. Six other men were entombed and perished. Bronze medal to Richard Madew, of Eldorado, a miner, aged 24 years, who materially assisted Joseph Ferguson in rescuing his mates from danger. Perhaps you may know of the lady mentioned below Phyllis. Phyllis was the daughter of Harry Hollister who drove coaches for Crawford and Connolly. Harry was born in Stanley in 1870 and died in Wodonga at 84 years in 1954. He is buried in Wodonga. He married Beatrice STONE in 1898 (died in 1944). The couple had four children one of whom was Phyllis Isabel who married in 1933 Wal Humphris and lived in Wodonga. She died in 1997 and used to lead the Anzac Day service at the cenotaph. She was President of the RSL Women's Auxiliary, catered for the Mayday Hills. Was a musical lady from what I have been told played the organ and sang. Perhaps someone remembers this lady on Anzac Day. Denise

Hello Sharon, Thank you for your interest and your reply. I had already used the Gazeteer to find : HONEYSUCKLE County: Moira and Delatite Other names: Violet Town VIOLET PONDS County: Delatite and Moira Other names: Honeysuckle Creek. I had discounted these as too far away from Chiltern where Mary Annette Roberts was buried on 11th August 1863. Christine Watson has also answered my query off list, with another Honeysuckle Creek in the area much closer to Chiltern and Indigo. Hello Tom I was browsing the AVNE mailing list (not a subscriber at this stage) & seen your query re Honeysuckle Creek. Honeysuckle Creek is south of Chiltern in the Mt Pilot Regional Park. It runs into Deep Creek which runs into the Black Dog Creek & it flows on into the Murray River. It is in the next valley across (towards Melbourne) from the Indigo Creek & valley. People did live along the Honeysuckle Creek in days gone by. I live in Chiltern & we have been brought up with stories that the area up the Honeysuckle is haunted. As for finding gold up there , I don't belive they did but I will check with my Uncle & find out what he remembers. Hope this is a help Christine Your quick reply is much appreciated, Regards from Tom Martin. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sharon Ross" <sharon@useoz.com> To: <AUS-VIC-NE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, April 29, 2002 5:43 PM Subject: Re: [AVNE] "REUNION" .
