    3. Hi Denise I'm afraid I don't know anything about his work in Tallangatta. The family moved several times, and later were in Swan Hill for some time and then in Burrumbuttock. My grandfather turned to building houses when motor vehicles came into vogue. My father was his apprentice, and they built several houses around Burrumbuttock in the 1920s.     3. Joseph McCormick (Constable) was appointed to act as Clerk of Petty Sessions at Gaffney's Creek - when vice Senior Const Cummins was relieved. July 1867 William Owens is charged, on warrant, with careless use of fire at Mansfield, on the 13th January by which property belonging to Donald McDonald was destroyed. The offender is Irish, a labourer, aged about 30 5 feet 4 or 5 inches, stout build about 11½ stone weight, black hair, dark complexion, full face, whiskers and moustache about a fortnight's growth flash and boastful manner, fair address; wore black billycock hat with the leaf turned down, and light-coloured Crimean shirt. He is supposed to have gone towards the Mount Pleasant diggings. - 2nd February 1867. Stolen off the horse of James Whitty at Wangaratta, on the 30th January a new saddle with maker's name (R. Thompson Albury) on both flaps, scab scratched; and a new plain snaffle-bridle with cheek strap broken - 12th February 1867. February 21st 1867 Frederick Corlass is charged on warrant, with uttering to David Manghan at Wangaratta on the 14th instant, a forged cheque purporting to be signed by James H. B. Spearing. He is English, formerly barman in Mr. Spearing's service aged 22 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, slender build, sallow complexion, dark hair very ligh whiskers, beard, and moustache, weak eyes, thin features and very talkative; wore blue sac coat light tweed trousers and vest, low crowned black hat with blue veil and elastic side boots. He is supposed to have gone to Melbourne, via Benalla - 20th February 1867. A warrant is expected against a man, name unknown, for stealing from Thomas Bradley, at Wangaratta on the 9th instant, a pair of grey blankets (since recovered) a blue blanket and a Scotch twilled shirt. The offender is supposed to be Irish, aged 50 5 feet 10 inches high, sandy hair, red whiskers and moustache, front teeth defective; wore Scotch twilled shirt very dirty moleskin trousers, good Blacher boots and brown felt hat.He is likely to have gone to Beechworth or Oxley. He goes about stealing small articles which he stows in a cornsack. - 15th February 1867. Stolen from the Court House at Benalla, about the 7th instant a deed of assignment between Alkemade and Adams on the first part, an John Adams on the second part, the property of Harman Croften. - 18th February1867. Stolen from a slaughter-yard at Benalla, on the night of the 8th instant, a butcher's knife nearly new, by Williams, and a butcher's steel with the top broken off, two rings in the top of the handle and a ring for the belt to go through. - 18th February 1867. February 28th 1867 Absconded from the service of Samuel M Lane, Tarrawingee, on the 20th instant, Joseph Dobson, aged 35 5 feet 10 inches high, swarthy complexion, dark hair and whiskers, no moustache, straight nose; wore plaid shirt moleskin trousers and dark brown billycock hat, and was followed by a black dog with a white face; and Frank Irving aged 40, 5 feet 8 inches high, fair complexion, light hair and whiskers, no moustache, large scar on chin, and stammering speech; wore moleskin trousers, Crimean shirt and billycock hat. Both are fencers - 25th February 1867.

January 3rd 1867 AN inquest was held on the 27th December at Echuca, on a fire by which the River Murray Hotel was totally destroyed on the 23rd, when the jury returned a verdict to the effect - That there was no evidence as to the cause of the fire. It is supposed to have been the result of an accident - 2nd January1867. COURT the next circuit - Beechworth Thursday 11 April GOLD ESCORT SERVICE FROM and after the 1st January proximo, no gold or treasure whatever will be carried by the Police Department to Melbourne, from Rutherglen, Chiltern, Yackandandah, Buckland, Bright, Jamieson, Wood's Point or any other place. Sufficient police guards will be furnished, if requested three days previously, on the first Wednesday in each month, from Jamieson and Beechworth, and on the day preceding the first Wednesday in each month from the other places to persons conveying gold or treasure, and desirous of such protection. January 3rd 1867 £100 REWARD - Whereas on the night of 30th November, the Public House known as the "Coach and Horses" belonging to Mr. Nicholas Herbert, situate near Beechworth, and a detached barn and stables, were wilfully set on fire by some person unknown: Notice is hereby given that the Imperial Insurance Company will pay the sum of One Hundred pounds for such information as will lead to the conviction of the offender. Information to be given to the Police Station Beechworth; or to Office of the Company, No 4, Collins street west, Melbourne - 7th December 1866 January 3rd 1867 WHEREAS on the night of Thursday, the 29th of November last, the Coach and Horses Hotel, owned and occupied by one Nicholas Herbert, situate on the Melbourne road, about four miles from Beechworth, was destroyed by fire together with a detached barn and stable belonging to the hotel; And whereas at an inquest held to investigate the origin of the fire, a majority of the jury were of opinion that it was wilfully caused: And whereas the said hotel and the furniture thereof were insured: And whereas the Imperial Insurance Company offer a reward of One hundred pounds for the detection of the person or persons who caused the said fire: Notice is hereby given that a reward of Fifty pounds (SUPPLEMENTAL TO THAT OFFERED BY THE imperial Insurance Company) will be paid by the Government for such information as will lead to the conviction of the person or persons guilty of setting fire to the premises.
