Hello everyone I am looking for any info on "GLENMORE STATION" that any one might have, or know of. Any time frame. Any thoughts greatfully received Noeleen
I need Help!! When James Smith died 21 Oct 1915, he owned 240 acres of land made up of (4) allotments Lot (7) J Roberts & J Smith 56 acres Lot (4) T & P Cochran 56 acres Lot (3) T & P Cochran 64.0.25 acres Lot (2) Robert Wood 64.0.25 acres 28-12-1857 Total 240.0.50 acres Does anyone know when these allotments were purchased by James Smith ? or how I may find out ?? James willed the property to his daughter Nell Kerr, when she died 19 Apr 1931 she did not leave a will and the property had to be sold and funds distributed amongst the family. I understand that a Mr Walter (Watty) Hulme purchased the 240 acres and held it for a time, then sold the (4) allotments seperately. In 1939 Joseph Boyd purchased Lot (7) of 56 acres from Mr Watty Hulme and this property is still in the family. Can any kind person clarify or add to the history of this property ?? I have a copy of a diary of James' son David Smith which says that he built what appears to be a timber and hession house commencing on the 2nd June 1900, Duke Gardner was helping. What happened to this House ??? That's all for now, I do have more to share, thank you Doug
Noeleen A few bits that may be of interested. One result on my indexing the book. Kathy From Wangaratta 1824-1963 p.33(bio) George Vincent, born dorsetshire 1780, died Wangaratta 1850, father of Jacob, Jonathan and Isaac. 1841 migrated to NSW and settled at Unndarlo, 1846 moved to Glenmore Station (near Whitfield), 1847 arrived Wangaratta and settled. p.158(bio) "Bogong Jack", probably John Paynter or Payne, butcher of Omeo. The most successful of horse thieves, stealing horses in gippsland and bringing them over the Alps to NSW. A diversion would be staged in Wangaratta and Bogong Jack or one of his mates arrested by Sergeant Meyers but never detained long. A Police post was established at Glenmore to stop this and Bogong Jack eventually retired. p.161(bio) James Quinn...A number of arrests of John Quinn, James Quinn Jun., and John Lloyd, decided James Quinn Senior., in 1861 to sell out and move to Glenmore at the head of the King River. This was on the direct route from Mansfield to the Murray, and consequently frequented by cattle and horse thieves. However, there was still trouble with the police and many of the family were arrested and imprisoned. James Senior died on 22nd August, 1869, and the station was later sold. there were disagreements amongst the various members of the family and for some time a police post was set up near Glenmore. > Hello everyone > > I am looking for any info on "GLENMORE STATION" that any one might have, or know of. Yes Kaye Well possibly yes. 2 of his grandchildren Rosamund Campbell and Philippa Harvie wrote the forward to 'The Banjo's best-loved poems' Sydney 1985. Published by Harbour Books. Ken
Hi Peter, I think you are thinking of the Taylors Gap crossing, there was a bridge over the line, and it is on top of the Gap, close to the Beechworth turn off. The Blue Bell crossing was much closer to Myrtleford. The old road ran under the hill, the Blue Bell crossing was where the road met the hill on the Wang. side. there was another crossing where the road left the hill on the Myrtleford side (forget the name of that crossing). The Blue Bell would only be about 3 or 4 Km's out of Myrtleford. Beverley, I think that I remember that wretched railway crossing! Going from Myrtleford towards Wang, wasn't it on a left hand bend at the top of a hill, and in a narrow gulley as well? Scary. Was it not far from the turn-off to Beechworth via Buckland Gap road? I have not heard of the Blue Bell Hotel, but the Blue Bell railway crossing was the second railway crossing after you left Myrtleford going towards Wangaratta. It was quite a dangerous crossing. Some years ago the road was re-routed and bypassed this crossing. It's a couple of k's out of Myrtleford. - Perhaps is was called the Blue Bell crossing because of the hotel.
