Denise On Feb 4 you posted a reply to Jill and gave entries from Baillier's Directory and the voters roll for the referendum. I wondered do you have these on CD or Library access to them ? Ore are they on the Internet? I am not after a lookup just interested where they are should I ever need to search them. Kel from Benalla. Interests mainly Benalla and Winton Cemeteries and Lone Graves or really small cemeteries.

Hello Kaye, Well, I must say, this is akin to winning lotto, and thank you so much for looking it up for me, and sending it on. What a wonderful lot of info. about these fellows. What a great and varied life William had, what a shame there were no children? But lots of nieces and nephews, I guess. I've almost got all the main details of the ORR family and their spouses etc., and it's good to be getting into the area of what their lives were like, and what they did for a living etc. I wonder if you could look up another two men for me please? James Galt ORR, he was a clerk, and then Auctioneer. Thomas H. ORR, Orchardist, Wangaratta. Only if you have time, of course. Many thanks and best wishes, Jill.
Dear List A family of Chinese origin with the surname SEEKAY lived in the Moama district in the 1890's and earlier. I have preliminary information from the BDM indexes on line. Any other information on this family would be gratefully received. Regards Liz Darcey
Hi Jill, this is your William, and his sister Jeanie - M Rosalyn Shennan. (1990). Pioneers of the Ovens & Townsmen of Beechworth. "William ORR, Miner and MLC, Beechworth and Wangaratta. Born near Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland on 13th February, 1843, the son of William ORR, farmer and his wife Jane (nee HUNTER). Whilst there William joined the firm of J H GRAY and Company, later opening a business in association with the company in Wangaratta where he resided at 'Glenarvon'. ORR became involved in municipal affairs and was a member of the Wangaratta Borough Council from 1875 to 1882 and Mayor from 1877 to 1888. In 1887 he entered into partnership with his brother James as land salesmen in Melbourne. He later joined his father in Queensland where he had mining and pastoral interests. He also spent several years in Broken Hill, Mount Isa and Tasmania where he was a partner in the Mount Lyell copper mine. ORR was a member of the Legislative Council for the Northeast Province from November 1901 to May 1904. He was married in 1878 to Mary FRASER, the daughter of William FRASER of Tallygaroopna, near Shepparton. They had no family. The following year he moved to Chiltern where he kept a wine and spirit store for two years, returning to Beechworth where he joined the firm of J H GRAY, auctioneers. After GRAY's death in June 1861, he purchased a share in the company and was joined by Mr J G ORR in the 1870s. On 12th July 1864, William TELFORD married GRAY's widow Jeanie Hunter Galt, the daughter of William ORR and Jane (nee HUNTER). Jeanie was born in Ayrshire, Scotland in 1834. ..... Is it possible for someone to look up an old newspaper or book and see the name of the wife of the ORR who was a politician, or his age please? I think it would be unlikely that my William was an Auctioneer and MLA at the same time. Does anyone have an thoughts on that? >This is another William ORR who might be the MLA.?? Surname: ORR Given Names: Mary Ann Event: D Spouse Surname/Father: William Spouse Gvn Names/Mother: Margaret FRASER Age: 3W Sex: Birth Place: WANG Death Place: Year: 1866 Reg Number: 6847< . Hi Mary, Jackie has already told me about John ORR, thanks for letting me know you had the book. Cheers, Jill
Hi Jackie, Thanks for that info, now I can eliminate him, and any family of his I find. Could be cousins of our ORR family, but I don't think I want to go that far just now.Too many twigs to clog the 'drain's'. Best wishes, Jill

Hi All If anyone has access to the above index and would be willing to do a look up for me, please contact me off list. Cheers Anne Hanson [email protected]
Margery, I wouldn't say it was an error - It seems the Registrar was probably being super-efficient and covering all options with respect to pervious issue. In fact it would have helped me in a number of research situations if such a question had been compulsory (i.e. where the parents had previously been married or had children in another relationship). My sister was registered at birth in Swan Hill on 25th November 1930. (U.R. Beverford). Under ' Parents' the name of the father is given and in this case under "Previous Issue" is the following:- Previous issue - No previous issue. By a former marriage No issue. There was definitely no former marriage. Has anyone else ever come across such a discrepancy (or similar) on a Birth Registration certificate? Why would those words be entered - could it simply have been an error by the Registrar? Margery
