    1. Help Please - Off Topic Though
    2. Catherine Browne
    3. Hi Everyone, Firstly my apologies for being off topic and then for cross posting but I need you help... My husband's father passed away on the weekend and he has the job of writing the eulogy for his father. My husband is after the words to a poem that goes something like - "when I was young I thought my dad knew everything, when I was a teenager I thought he knew nothing & now I realise he knew everything" or something along those lines. Can anybody help me with the words but we need them today as the funeral is Wednesday. Many thanks, Catherine

    3. Jo, Have e-mail Ian Hyndman the author of Beechworth Cemetery - A stroll through history and asked him to e-mail you. There are also references to the Warrens in Tom Griffith's, Beechworth An Australian Country Town & Its Past. Am not sure where you live, but you should be able to get that book and Carole Woods book if you live in Victoria. If you have a problem doing same get back to me. In the 1857 Ovens Directory I found a Mrs. Warren living at Cornwall House, Loch Street, Beechworth. Thanks Anne, I am interested in all of them as they are all related. William is William Henry, my Great Great Grandfather, and his brother Richard then obviously becomes my Great Great Uncle. Dick also is related. I know Richard is Buried at Beechworth, and as one of the pioneers of the area am sure he'd be mentioned in the Cemetery book. Am looking forward to hearing from Ian, or ordering a copy. Also chasing Rowes and others from the pioneering era of Beechworth. Regards Jo. Jo, There are 3 Warrens referred to in Beechworth A Titan's Field - Carole Woods - that is Dick, Richard & William - which one are you interested in? Beechworth Cemetery - A stroll through history by Ian Hyndman only lists a few of graves of historic interest, but I think you could order a copy from the writer himself. I will contact him and ask him to e-mail you. He is also a member of the Beechworth Cemetery Trust so he would be able to help you out in relation to burial enquiries. 3. Hello Jill, John H Matthews is listed in the Ovens Directory [1857] at the back of Background to Beechworth as a chemist in the Woolshed locality. I did a quick check through the rest of the book and through Carole Wood's book - "A Titan's Field" but couldn't find anything else. The localities within the Directory include Reid's Creek, Woolshed, Devil's Elbow[Lower Woolshed], Sebastopol Flat etc. Hope this helps - it's not much, sorry! Thanks. 3. Dear List, Just back from what my husband refers to the "genealogy" holiday through some of the North East. Visited several cemetries. I also have the new book about the history of the gold rush and settlement of "The Buckland Valley Goldfield" by Diann Talbot. There is some information about families (although mainly history) and I am willing to do look ups for people if they are interested. I also now have a copy of "Big Camp Wahgunyah" which I am also willing to do look ups for. Regards, Robyn Kane Amsterdam

    1. A plough
    2. Peter Ross
    3. I've had an old plough lying about the place for years and finally I've put it where it can be seen in the garden as "decoration". So for the first time, I've really had a good look at it. It's a single furrow plough, with two handles (as you'd expect), and on the main iron component there are three words stamped in when the metal was still red-hot. In large capital letters on the top is the name HUNTLY, and beside that a word I simply can not read (not even a letter) and at this stage can't tell whether it's upside down even! Further down the piece is most of the word CARLTON, again in large capitals. Is anyone able to help identify this for me? It looks perfect where I've put it, and would like to know more about it.
