I've been chasing Arthur Allen of Buckland 1850-1860 who had a wife Sophia (Bush). He is not the one I want. Have a few newspaper snippets etc. so if anyone has Arthur in a tree, happy to pass all this along to you. Please note - Should anyone be reading this by searching the Archives this offer is not open, after November 2005. Sorry, I will have deleted it by then. regards Denise
Good morning Looking for family of Joanna BREEN who was in the Bright area during the 1850s. She married in 1859 to SPAULDING. She is not the Johanna Breen who died in Bright in 1885. Does anyone know of this family? regards Denise
If Kate is still a member of this list could she please contact me. Her old email address bounced. Many thanks, Sharon Bagnall.
My husband when he applied for a home loan in Victoria in the 1970's he was knocked back by his bank. Which bank? He had the deposit and a good job. The reason? He was single. The bank would only give a loan to married men. He then changed banks and got the loan! Cheers Kathryn
Hi Kathryn (and anyone else with similar hopes), Good luck with that splendid plan to write about your own childhood and life. I don't know if it appeals or not, but u3a Australia Online (for older folk around the world) offers excellent independent study courses to keep you motivated on this one: <http://www3.griffith.edu.au/03/u3a/> Click on "Courses" at left and then on "Learning Online" to see a list of independent study courses, which include two that will be most useful to you. Writing Family History Autobiography and Journalling You can click again on these to find out more. Registration is free but when you apply to enrol in a course you may be asked to pay a course fee. I have done both these courses in the past and found them most helpful. Anne My gr-gr-gr-gr grandparents married in 1854 in Wodonga. Groom gave his age as 27 and bride 16 years - she was actually 12! There is no statement on the certificate indicating who gave permission for the bride to marry. Regards Simon
After typing up my cousins story (she wrote it in 1980 and died 1982) I have become inspired to write about my own childhood and life. I wish I could ask Ivy more about some of the things she wrote about. Ivy was born 1892. Maybe in 50 years time my ancestors will be reading about me. I want to write things down now why I still remember! If anyone feels inspired along with me, may I suggest you start writing down about where you were born, the schools you went to, about the holidays you took etc. Add a few photos to your story. I guess I will now "hit the typewriter" Cheers Kathryn

Hi All, If any of you in your family history research have come across 1853/1854 Victorian marriages where the bride was 13 or 14 and the groom at least twice the brides age would you mind telling me about it please? Im thinking this was quite a common practice so Im testing out a theory. Thanks Anne Hanson
Hi Anne, Delatite Station was and is near Mansfield. However on an early Parish map of the Southern portion of the town of Benalla the county is listed as DELATITE. At the time you are referring to Benalla was a main settlement and Mansfield was not, My guess is "Benalla" was nearest well known place. Hence Delatite station, Benalla. Kel from Benalla
Thanks Anne. This is the same man who witnessed a death in 1854 and he noted himself as Architect. Corinne thank you for this, it's a great start for us. We will certainly send you what we find, but it will be a while before we get to Alexander, but we promise we will. Meanwhile all this is filed safely. At the moment Chris and I are deep into researching well over two dozen women and men from Maine USA who made the northeast home, for a while at least but many stayed. All these men came from one area of that state and Chris and I are in touch daily with someone over there from a History Museum who is so helpful it is amazing. The enjoyment at that end is gratifying, and they believe in our work. We have many old photos on the way, information on various aspects of our research for that group and we also send back what we have found from this end. When finished we shall send a small book on these men to the Museum as a gift. When I first thought of tackling something like this about two years ago I knew there were several Americans in the northeast, but believe me I never dreamed there were so many and still they keep appearing. The project is bigger than we thought it would get, bigger than Ben Hur. No wonder 4th July was a big thing in the northeast. It is very exciting and the American project is forging ahead well. We are really excited about the results, we have got a lot more information than we ever believed we could on the lives of these American women and men. Thanks Corinne, we will get back to you Denise and Chris

Hi everyone. A couple of nights ago I put over a query about deaths which were close by in Register numbers. I have solved my problem. They all died within 3 months of one another in Beechworth. I bought one of the certificates and took it further - here are some spare deaths - happy to send if you are interested. Joseph Howes - had married wife in London. Christian Myer - from Denmark Henry Miller - from London - 24 years in Australia James Girvan - not known where from. Denise

Denise, See page 82, Beechworth a Titan's Field. I think the man's name is Francis H. Nixon. Also check index on page 221 under Nixon. I'm no expert, but there is the Delatite River that runs through Merrijig which is near Mansfield and Mt. Buller. Maybe the station was named after that. Not sure where it flows from or to. 27 July 2005 Hi All, I think Im going slightly mad because its my understanding that Delatite Station was in the county of Delatite yet a page from the Christ Church Kilmore marriage register has the address of the bride and groom as Delatite Station, Benalla. Benalla as far as I am aware was in the country of Moira. Is it possible the cleric was just confused and made a mistake? Also according to a map in a book called Victorian Squatters compiled by Robert Spreadborough and Hugh Anderson was roughly between Mansfield and Jamieson. Cheers Anne Hanson
