    3. Hi Cherry I may be connected through the Ellis/Fanning families. Henry Ellis married Hannorah Fanning, their daughter Mary Ann married Samuel Barber, they were my Great Grandparents. Look forward to hearing from you about this family. 3. Regarding the Ellis connection. Does this interest include Ian Ellis (b abt 1942) who I think is married to Carolyn Foster (my second cousin) b 1962 and lives near Kiewa today. or Raymond Ellis b1967 or Esther Ellis who married Daniel Plunkett in the UK in 1918 when serving in the AIF. Daniel's mother was Mary Jane Abbott and grandmother was Mary Anne Swasbrick ?? 3. He also had info on Flagstaff 'Hill' and said that many more may have been buried there, but the crosses at the graveheads were mainly wooden, and most were stolen for firewood in those very desperate times. It was a most interesting night-time walk around Melbourne. We were looking for ghosts...however I never spotted, nor 'felt' any! 3. My gg gran is there too. It is now the Old Melbourne General Cemetery located at the back of the university in Parkville. The Necropolis at Springvale looks after it records and admin-wise. When it was young - round 1850s - it WAS the NEW Melbourne cemetery, the old one at the present day Queen Vic market site having been closed and the bodies moved to the new one as best they could. Human remains are still dug up in renovations to the market however. If you want to go back further, the first burial place was Flagstaff hill = gardens as it is now. But I think just a few were buried there before the Queen Vic site started - and it quickly became obviously too small. I think it took a few years for the old Queen Vic one to close completely and the new Parkville one to take over totally - I am sure someone will give you more precise years and info than me. Hope this helps Dawn (Melbourne) -----Original Message----- From: aus-vic-ne-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-vic-ne-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Anne Hanson Sent: Thursday, 28 December 2006 10:34 PM To: aus-vic-ne@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [AVNE] New Cemetery, Melbourne Laurette, I could be completely wrong but the New Cemetery, Melbourne sounds like Melbourne General Cemetery. 3. Hi Robert, Yes, I have checked out every Robert Lees and none seem to fit. My Robert LEES was born in Glossop, Derbyshire in 1824 his parents were Henry Lees and Elizabeth Stead/Steed. Robert brought his wife Emily and children to Victoria in 1883 and lived in the Malvern District. In Glossop Robert had been a property owner and cotton manufacturer but apparently fell on hard times after his arrival in Vic. Family history says in his later years he worked on a bridge project somewhere near Albury. This is about all I know of Robert in Australia. 3. I hope everyone on the list had a very joyous Christmas and are looking forward to the year ahead. A few months ago I asked the list if anyone knew where Emily LEES who died at Albury might have been buried. Chris checked the Albury cemetery records for me and said that Emily was not buried there. Today I received a copy of Emily's death certificate which says she was buried at the Albury Cemetery in February 1912. The reason I am so keen to find Emily's burial place is in finding hers I will also find her husband Robert John LEES. I have been unable to find his death either in Vic or NSW. As Robert was 15 years older than Emily and on her death certificate she is said to be an 'old age pensioner' I am supposing he was dead before her. Any help or any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Regards Judy

    3. Hello Kathy, Personal thanks for your Christmas and New Year wishes, may I wish you , all friends on the List, and of course Peter who keeps the wheels turning, and my" Cornish Cousins" all the Blessings of Christmas, and may the New Year be everything that you could possibly wish it to be for you. Some rain would be very welcome, I went down to my son"s place at Chiltern yesterday,.terrible to see the dry bare paddocks along the highway. The Parnaby family had a very successful reunion here on 28th October, people from many miles away, they compiled a book "Three Parnaby Brothers from Whenby"342 pages, for the occasion, with families in England South Africa and Australia and including lots of photographs.Regards to all and thanks for tolerating the two finger ramblings of an old bloke. Sincerely Alan French.

    3. Hello Peter, So pleased to read your better news, the fire came as a great shock to me when I heard of it in the early morning A B C news, I felt I had lost a part of my life as I had the great privilege of being Secretary of the Society during the restoration of a very derelict building and the establishment of the Museum, also memories of very good friends from Yack. Stanley, Kiewa Valley, etc, sadly no longer with us ,who contributed so much to what was seen by many people as an impossible dream. May I wish the Society and the Yack Community every success in whatever decision is made rebuilding, etc. I seem to remember that we rebuilt the eastern wall. May the Blessings of Christmas be with you ,and all my friends in Yack, and may the new year be very kind to one and all, perhaps it may rain. Regards Alan French

    3. To everyone on the list Have a wonderful Christmas with family and friends and enjoy all the joys and blessings that this time of year brings. Hope the new year of 2007 is full of all that you wish for and family history wise brings many new finds. Our thanks and thoughts are with all the men and women who are at the forefront of the bushfires. We thank God for the the rain and cooler conditions which are helping them in their fight. The loss of many of our historic treasures such as the bridge at Walhalla and the unique historical building of the Yackandandah Museum is heart breaking. Take care and have a safe and happy holiday season. Regards Kathy Myles [Drummond - Hadley - Jarvis]
