    1. [AUS-VIC-MINERS-RIGHTS] Notice that this list is about to close.
    2. Peter Lakeman
    3. Hello members of the AUS-VIC-MINERS-RIGHTS mailing list, currently hosted on Rootsweb/Ancestry servers. My name is Peter and I have been the list administrator of this list since it was abandoned. I have no idea when it was abandoned nor who the previous admin was. On 7th January 2020, Rootsweb informed all list admins that they will not be providing any mailing list services after 2nd March 2020, except to keep the archives available (see RW email appended below). In other words, all lists will cease to be. If members want to keep this list active, they will need to host it on a new server. A number of such servers exist, such as groups.io, FaceBook, google groups. I personally do not wish to remain the admin of this list, so one of the members will need to step up as a new administrator if they want to keep this list alive. As a side comment, I think that many of the smaller lists were created on a person's whim in Rootsweb's heyday, and are probably past reviving. I can't remember when the last post to this list was. If there are any questions, please post them to the list, but do it quickly as time is running out quickly. Cheers Peter ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails.  Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state. Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb. As an alternative to RootsWeb Mailing Lists, Ancestry message boards are a great option to network with others in the genealogy community. Message boards are available for free with an Ancestry registered account. Thank you for being part of the RootsWeb family and contributing to this community. Sincerely, The RootsWeb team ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    3. Thanks for looking, but I didn't expect to find much. Charles Fraser was at Kangaroo Flat near Talbot in 1861. Not too sure before that, so I think Eaglehawk is a bit too far away. Giacomo Plozza was a Dean then Mollonghipp, so definitely too far away. 1. Re: [AUS-VIC-MINERS-RIGHTS] The Goldminers Database
    2. Kae Lewis
    3. www.kaelewis.com My webpage above has The Goldminers Database which is a searchable database containing 50000 records of New Zealand gold miners, dates from 1861 to 1872, for Otago and Thames. Just to let you know that the vast majority of these miners came directly from the Victoria Goldfields. So worth a look, for any Aussie miners. I always intended to extend the database to Australian Goldfields. However when I visited several years ago, I went to places like Archives in Melbourne, library and Museum at Ballarat and was told by them that no Miners records from their goldrush era have survived. I found a few actual Miners Rights certificates at several libraries but no govt records or lists for mining records of the 1859 - 61 era. I am still interested in adding Victoria if anyone ever comes up with them. In the meantime, the Goldminers Database probably represents the best freely searchable list of Victorian Miners available so far. The other place you can try is the Victoria Outwards. The shipping records, especially for 1861 are dominated by men whose occupation is given as 'miner' and heading for Gabriels Gully immediately following its opening in August 1861. An advantage of this index, if you find your miner on there, is it gives age and country of origin, as well as occupation. Even if Victoria Miner's Rights records had been available, they dont give this kind of detail: http://guides.slv.vic.gov.au/content.php?pid=99868&sid=753618 indexed online at SLV: http://search.slv.vic.gov.au/primo_library/libweb/action/dlDisplay.do?dscnt=1&docId=SLV_VOYAGER562960&vid=MAIN&fromLogin=true Also NZ Soc Genealogists have indexed them and the CD of data is available for sale: http://www.genealogy.org.nz/Sales_11.aspx?CategoryId=11 And on top of all that, many of the early miners in Victoria came directly from the Californian goldfields. You can search them in the 1852 census by county, using FamilySearch.org. https://familysearch.org/search/collection/show#uri=http://familysearch.org/searchapi/search/collection/1771089 Regards, Kae Lewis www.kaelewis.com

    3. I attended some training at the AIGS yesterday and picked up this information. There is a website http://wotsmygenes.com/ that has a few pages, in particular the Bathurst Pioneers Register which seems to be the one referred to below. According to my notes only the surnames are shown on-line, but the site gives details of where to purchase the CD. Pioneer Index of Births Deaths and Marriages in Victoria 1836-1888 has 123 Hales entries, though none for either Samuel or Robert Hales. I'm happy to look up (within reason) if you have another name to check as I have the whole set of these indexes. These give minimal information, but shows year of event, place, parent or spouse and has the reference number to order certificate from Department of Justice. What a pity we don't have something similar here in Oz. I note there are quite a few entries for a Samuel HALES in your database. Our Robert had a brother Samuel (b 1840 in Suffolk). Could you direct me to somewhere that might give me some more personal details of the Samuel in your database. Also, I note the Bathurst Family History Group has a CD of "Pioneers". The surname "HALES" is in the listing eight times. Does anyone know of the index or of where I might get a lookup from it? 3. Dear Kae, I got details of one of my maternal g-grandfathers, William Mac(Mc)Duff the other night, but tonight I cannot seem to get into the system to get details of the other, Theophilus McCollum. Both at Thames goldfields. Theo in particular had an eventful time there. When I write "details" I mean that I get simply date, location, district, and source. Please advise. 3. I had a huge increase in the number of visitors to the Goldminers Database since I mentioned it on this list. Bravo! Could listers please let us all know if they found ancestors on the database. I am very keen to identify as many miners on the database as possible. Eventually I hope to add more information about each miner as it becomes available. You can also visit 'Goldrush Online' on Facebook and leave a comment there or start a discussion, if you wish. The database will only be as good as you help to make it. Further to that though, Tom below has written to tell me about the Register Book of Mining Leases in Victoria now at The PRO in Melbourne. I was at there at the PROV in October last year enquiring about mining records and was sent on my way with NOTHING available, according to the staff on duty that day. So can anyone throw any light on this. More especially, is there a local person who could go to PROV Melbourne and recheck this. If there was someone who could photograph these or any Australian mining records for me, I will be happy to get them onto the database. I am only interested in goldrush records ie up to 1861 for Victoria. There is nothing more I can do as I don't live in Australia and was only there on holiday last year. Everywhere I went making enquiries about mining records in Victoria was met with long faces and shrugs. Its sad but I really need some local knowledge and help if Aussie goldminers are ever going to make it onto the database. Regards, Kae Lewis www.kaelewis.com Dear Kae, I have received your email, via rootweb, relating to your search for information about Miners Rights in Victoria. I did considerable research some years ago on this subject for a family project I was working on and was able to access a number of records in the custody of the Public Records Office, Victoria at Laverton. I understand that the office at Laverton has now been closed and all of the records have been transferred to the Public Records Office - Victoria at 99 Shiel Street, North Melbourne, 3051, Telephone:(03) 9348-5600. Email:ask.prov@dvx.gov.gov.au. They also have a web site: http://www.prov.vic.gov.au/welcome.htm. Enquires to be addressed to:Senior Manager, Access Services or Senior Manager, Record Services' In my research I was able to access Registers Books of Mining Leases in Victoria for the period 1858 to 1888 and I am certain that they were available for a much wider period. I hope this information will be of some assistance to you. Good Luck, Tom Armour, Auckland, New Zealand.
