    3. > 1858. William Wells arrives back in Beechworth runs the British Hotel, > hotel is closed, and broken up, wife left with anxiety ? not sure of date What do you mean not sure of date? Didn't I give the date for the OMA on this report? If you can work out the approximately timeframe from the archives (my postings of 1858) I'll go back and check. Believe me, there are many many articles in the papers over that time about Willie's past and the poor treatment of him in 1858. You'll just have to read them when you are ready. I didn't, the Wells confuse me (g). I know how Rosemarie feels. > 1861 William auctions HUNT'S BRITISH HOTEL (maybe it wasn't his just need > some cash ;-) 22.5.1861 Wm Wells Hunts' British Hotel Bowman's Forest - license granted. So Willie rebuilt the broken up hotel by 1861 and put on the market but obviously didn't sell. What happened to wife's anxiety. Given the fact that renewal of license was essential to running or even selling the hotel, Willie would have had to renew a month after putting up for auction. The applications for renewal had to be in some time before granted - otherwise nope, no grant. It seems you couldn't just roll up and being renewed. 3 Mile 22.5.1861 Alex Stewart British Hotel 3 Mile Creek. license renewed. > 1864 Applying for licences William Wells Bowman's Forest and Tom Mocket of > Ellen 3 Mile Tom Mocket of Ellen? ??? In cahoots with Willie? > 1864 - now Ellen's British Hotel 3 Mile, they still had it 1876 > 18.1.83 > At the B.worth court house the postponed application of Thomas Ellen for > renewal of his license for the British pub at 3 Mile was considered. > Now Maurice Ellen who worked with C & C was brother to the one who owned > the British hotel. Maurice's daughter, Fanny born Beechworth 1859 married > at Seaton 1881 to Frederick Wells, she was killed when her buggy went over > the Buckland Gap. I've heard this story several times from Jack who confused the daylights out of the policeman when caught for speeding in the Buckland Gap area. He told him the story of granny going over the gap. Policeman thought it had just happened and probably Jack's excuse for speeding. The events were 100 years apart in fact. I can see the headlines "GRANDMA FLIES OVER THE GAP, GRANDSON IN PANIC. POLICE SEARCH & RESCUE" Frederick must have had a brother William Wells whose daughter Daisy Aunt Daisy PM- know of her well! She's been with us often around the dinner table in Maleny. Jack's a character and tells the stories well. >When I have a chance to research this mob it may make good reading if Willy >is related! All I can say is you had better include a mud map in the book! You haven't told me who HUNT is! Well, it's 6.30 am and the day has started well. D
