There is a well-worn path from my house to the SLV these days I can assure you (g) From my point of view, the numerous postings have encouraged me to look at the family history from different points of view. That information on every facet of their lives does exist, you do however need to be persistent, and should attempt to acquire as much information as possible to help construct the larger picture. I am currently reading a book 'Land, Labour and Gold' by William Howitt. It details the overland journey from Melbourne to Spring Creek in 1852, and includes very descriptive writings on Spring Creek, Reids Creek, Nine Mile Creek, and Buckland Valley gold rush. I'd recommend anyone interested in the 1852-1854 period to find a copy.
