Beechworth SSchool again has a Xmas break up. Master C Beck who possesses a nice voice in his song "Kiss me and I'll go to sleep" elicited a storm of applause and showers of bouquets and had to reappear in response to a heartily expressed encore when he repeated the last verse. - License approved - James L Wilberforce 319 a Bruarong. - 20.12.83 A very destructive fire took place at Bowman's Forest on Tuesday afternoon. About half past one o'clock the kitchen chimney attached to the brick building occupied as a general store and dwelling house by Mr. Christopher Mummery and containing 8 rooms caught fire. Mrs. M. and her niece who were the only ones home extinguished the fire with the assistance of a nephew who noticed the blaze when passing. Two hours later when engaged in whitewashing the walls of one of the front rooms (making preparations for Christmas-tide) Mrs. M's attention was called by her niece to a strange sound in the store. Flames were bursting thru the ceiling of the storeroom at a point underneath the gutter of the double roof which was shingled. Exercising all haste Mrs. M and her two assistants go out the store books (except one) and a quantity of clothing and bedding; but so rapidly did the fire spread that nothing further was saved and the large store and its contents were soon a mass of smoking ruins. Insured in the Norwich Union Co. for £300 the stock for £800 and the household furniture for £100. Mrs M accounts for the fire by the presumption that a cinder from the burning chimney alighted on the singles unnoticed. Her husband had been absent fro the past week bringing a large flock of sheep from Albury and only learned the news of his misfortune on his arrival in B/worth on Wednesday. He estimates the loss as a serious one as he says that within the last two months he took stock and valued it at £1330 and his furniture at £250. - P Frauenfelder fined 10/- for not registering his dog/s - James Kyle wins tender for erection of a new dining hall at the Benevolent Asylum - ). - PP again, Andrew Beck is now prepared to supply his Patent Grape Crusher the most perfect hand machine yet out. Murmungee Hotel renewed in the name of Jane Haworth nee Jane ALLEN - Christmas Eve in Beechworth 1883 Beechworth presented a most animated appearance. The town was brilliantly lighted; various places of business were kept open and their owners did a busy trade among the townspeople and visitors who thronged the streets. It was pleasant to hear the oft expressed wishes of "a merry Christmas' and 'compliments of the season to you' and to witness the warm greetings as friend met friend; and all among the well dressed crowd appeared to forget the cares and anxieties of every day life in the pleasure it felt at this festive season, when the thought uppermost in people's minds is as it s hould be one of "Peace good will toward men"> - THE END of 1883.
