G'day All, I've just been contacted by a US member of the Shanahan Family in the US, & was wondering if anyone on this list has connections? The Shanahans came from Borrakiella, Co. Cork, Ireland. (Shanahan's Noorongong property was called Borakiella.) Of 13 chn., 5 migrated in stages to Australia: Michael, Bartholomew (Bart), Margaret, Julia and Tim (Barney), who in 1872 joined his brothers at Yackandandah, working near Albury, and with a surveying party around Mitta and the north-east." (From Di Carroll's CD) I'm connected through the Mongan family (Ellen Mary married Timothy Shanahan). Cheers. Pat..
Hi Pat, One of my near neighbours, Mr Hilary HAYES of "Long Swamp", Osbornes Flat, via Yackandandah 3749, is a direct descendant of the Shanahans & has extensive knowledge of them. He still lives on the same property selected by his family in the 1850s, so naturally is connected to Mongans, Meehans, Shanahans, Kinchingtons, etc etc. I seem to recall that I've already given you details of Shanahan burials at Yack. Let me know if not the case and you'd like. Hilary is getting on a bit, doesn't have a computer, but I'm sure would like to hear from the US connection via ordinary mail or through me per email. I see quite a bit of him, and have helped him locate a good many old unmarked family graves at Yack. Pat The name Noorongong is where my Great-grandfather had land (Haeffner) so looked up my Parish Map and sure enough P Shanahan and T. Shanahan had land right near Haeffners. One was dated 16. 3 98 another 27.3.00 (for T Shanahan) and P.'s was dated 3 . 3. 04 - i.e. when land paid outright. Do you have this map?
