Hi Irene, Well it is a small world. We lived in Elp.for 20 years, went there in 1975 and loved it. We had some great times in that pub after cricket in the summer time . We would know lots of the same people I guess, some of the old ones have moved on but others are still there. I am researching the Metcalfe shire and doing the pubs at present. In one year the Shire issued 42 liquor licenses so how many 'pubs' could there have been in all those gold rush years. We think we may have found the site of the Four Mile Hotel near Tunnel Hill but difficult to prove. I am waiting to get some more maps for the area but they don't usually show the pubs. Nice to know there is another ex Elphinstone person out there. It was a popular watering hole for the locals as well as those travelling between Melb. and Bendigo. It was on the triangle between the highway and the tunroff to Chewton/Castlemaine. Some time after we left, the highway was changed and, so far as I know, cut the hotel off. There were only7 the pub, the general store and the railway station in our day. Sorry to but in on your message to Irene, I too am looking at hotels in the Elphinstone, near Castlemaine, and wonder if the Liquor Licence Boards would be able to provide more info about hotels, such adresses etc. Thankyou very much, Bev -----Original Message----- From: Dianne Carroll [mailto:highcountryheritage@dodo.com.au] Sent: Thursday, 30 September 2004 9:26 AM To: AUS-VIC-HIGH-COUNTRY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [HC] Finding details of Hotels Hi Irene, In my research of the huts I have found you can send $8.80 to Liquor Licence Boards GPO Box 4304 Melbourne 3001 and obtain all the licences for a particular hotel in Victoria Di ----- Original Message ----- From: "Irene R" <ivrbjr@bigpond.net.au> To: <AUS-VIC-HIGH-COUNTRY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, September 30, 2004 8:13 AM Subject: [HC] DUGGAN'S HOTEL ORBOST > Hi Listers > > Can anyone please give me any information about this hotel - location, age, > owners etc. My grandfather, Walter McHENRY, managed a billiard saloon there > I believe. > > This would have been some time between WW I and WW II.
