Hi Malcolm, Perhaps you are related to the late Leah Ward of Porepunkah? Old friend of my father's. Might I suggest a call / letter to my cousin Rory Lumsden of the Buckland, phone 0357 562261. Getting on a bit, but an authority on the Buckland's history. You'd have passed his place on the LHS on your way up the valley, just past "Falls View". If stuck, contact me off list. Hi Peter No, I'm afraid the Wards were very firmly from Tasmania - SHAKESPEARES lived (and died) at Buckland. Many thanks for the info re Rory - I'll give him a call. Extract of Henry Morgans Diary of Buckland January, 1882. 1st. Sunday - Last (week?) we did not work in the claim, but was engaged in garden, etc. Mother Hall is quite an invalid, not able to rise out of seat, but otherwise enjoying moderately good health. The Halls are hard up not finding any payable claim for several years. There was a frost the other night which even killed pumpkins two miles higher up the stream. 7th. Saturday - S. Paulussy, who is in bad health, has been in Beechworth this week. 14th. Saturday - our claim is only paying half wages and E. Webb and party below us is getting less than we are after considerable expense in driving a tunnel. 21st. Mrs. James Dunphy died on Thursday last, her new borne babe dying a few days before. She was an inveterate drunkard. This week our claim has paid about wages. 22nd. Mr. Andrew Maguire died on the night of this date at Jas. Johnson's at Wandiligong. He died of Bright's disease and his death was anticipated. 24th. Andrew Maguire was buried at the cemetery, Lower Flat Buckland - there being a large procession. Lady Di List Administrator
