Usually I can find my way around the world without any problems but when in Beechworth I never know which is north west south or east. So, could a local or anyone who probably knows, please tell me if I was standing at the Bakery looking across the street to the P.O. which direction would be south? Hi Hec thanks I'm trying to place a shop on Camp St which would have been between the P.O. and where the Empire is now. However from what I can work out the Empire was at least up until the fire of 1867 only about three doors from the P.O. I have someone who had a shop 'two doors south of the Empire hotel" the years were 1859 thru to 1865 or 66 so far that I can find my subject there. The description of where his shop was comes from advertisements. So how could he describe it for years as being south if it was alongside the Empire almost?????? Does anyone have reconstruction of Beechworth and in particular Camp Street and can look up 1861 for please and tell me what surnames run along that section of the road - ie. between Ford and High Streets.
