Dear Wendy, You could try getting a transcript of the death of David Milne age 44, who died in 1930 (reg. no. 13837) in Armidale NSW. He is close in age to your David James Milne, and it is possible the second four is really a nine which would give the right birth year. There are three transcription agents for BDM in NSW, that you can search for on the net (Turtle Consolidated, Marbract and Joy Murrin), and order a transcript through one of them, which is cheaper than going through NSW BDM regards, Wendy K. (Nowra, NSW)
Wendy, Thanks for this - I didn't think of followingn up on that registration but his wife died somewhere in NSW (in 1962 but no place specified) so here's hoping! I have used Marbract a number of times in the past and find Marilyn is very prompt.
