For those interested in the fate of the jail... A Melb based property developer is the new owner of the Beechworth jail, with plans to develop the historic site into an upmarket tourist attraction. Plans to turn part of the prison yard into an open air market for local produce, historic warden's quarters and admin block would be transformed into upmarket tourist accommodation. Other buildings developed into conference facilities. Interior - 100 individual cells used as wine cellars for premium wine in the region as well as providing retail space for wine sales and a restaurant. Construction begins next year, & be completed in early 2006. Plans to go before Indigo council & all work undertaken under the supervision of Heritage Victoria.
